One step remained until final approval of the bill regulating the state of Lukiškės Square: the Seimas approved this bill on Friday.
There were 44 Seimas members, 12 against and 5 abstentions.
In considering the project, the Seimas did not approve the installation of a monument to the Victims of Freedom of Lithuania and a monument representing the historical symbol of freedom struggles, Vytis, as the dominant accent of Lukiškės Square.
25 Seimas members voted in favor of said proposal from Seimas member Povilas Urbšis, 6 against, 28 deputies abstained
“The representative state square of Lithuania should have a dominant commemorative accent, which would be better understood in Lukiškės square by the state symbol – Vytis,” said P. Urbšys, who presented a proposal for the draft law on the commemorative state of Lukiškės square.
The parliamentarians also did not support the compromise proposal of the members of Seimas Vilija Aleknaitė-Abramikienė and Audronius Ažubalis to stipulate in the law that “a monument to the victims of Freedom of Lithuania must be erected in the dominant accent of Lukiškės Square”.
In an attempt to justify the appearance of the beach at Lukiškės Square, a member of Seimas Aušrinė Armonaitė noted that there was everything in this square, from a market, a roll to a bittersweet taste.
“Let’s look at the relationship between history and the future,” said the MP, “Do we need a law on the beach at Lukiškės Square? I have big doubts,” said Social Democrat Julius Sabatauskas, a member of Seimas. In his opinion, a conflict with the Constitution is possible here, since an attempt is made to pass a law on an object.
“This is another incredible example of legislation when we pass occasional legislation on a single event,” he said.
Member of Seimas Mantas Adomėnas suggested not adopting the law and providing an opportunity for civil society to discuss this issue. “Let’s trust the public, only public knowledge will help to find a solution. I suggest that the law is not approved, because this is not how the problems of historical memory should be solved,” said M. Adomėnas.
The Seimas plans to adopt the Lukiškės Square memorial status bill next week on Monday.
According to the project under consideration, Lukiškės Square is the main representative square of the Lithuanian state and is formed with accents commemorating freedom struggles.
It is proposed to legalize that Lukiškės Square, as a historically integrated comprehensive urban space, must perform representative, commemorative and social (cultural and recreational) state functions of Lithuania’s freedom fighters.
