Amber is an integral part of almost all Lithuanians – necklaces or pictures decorated with amber can be found everywhere. But few really know what properties it has and how to distinguish a real stone from a false stone.
From the theory to the practice.
Igoris Osnač, a guide in Amber, organizes “Secrets of Amber Catch” excursions in Karklė for those who want to learn more and even learn the characteristics of amber catch.
A 2 hour education will cost the group 70 euros and a 3 hour education 95 euros.
During them, I. Osnač talks about the origin of amber and its properties, introduces visitors to the original collection of guides. It also provides visitors with tasks such as distinguishing amber from non-amber.

Later, armed with special nets, we all headed out to sea.
Although the guide herself dresses in special clothing for fishermen, participants are offered to wear clothing according to the weather.
“In summer, when it’s hot, you can swimsuits. We take the nets and fly to the water. When the weather is colder and the waves are high, I go alone to the sea and show the whole process, because safety is also important, “he said.

Finding not guaranteed
I. Osnač 15 minutes He said that the tour itself and its content are aligned with the wishes of its participants. For example, if there are more children, a play “Jūratė and Kastytis” is organized, or it is possible to spend more time by the sea or listen to stories from the guide.
True, he noted that you never know if you will be able to catch amber.
“It is an excursion, not a catch of amber. I tell you about the whole process, people can try to fight the waves and then they understand what it takes if they want to continue doing it,” he said.
It was for us that we were looking for amber together with a German group that we had a stormy day. While we were standing with our jackets on the shore, the guide Igor dived into the water and tried to catch the marine amber with a sieve.
On the shore, our group not only observed the entire process, but also, among the pebbles, polished sticks and seaweed, we looked for discarded amber. After a few minutes, Igor returns with a sieve full of pebbles, one of which is amber in color.
And finally, on the last try, we found a fairly large piece that goes to the tour participant, German Utah.

When is it better to look for amber?
“There are always possibilities, but it is better after a storm when the sea is a little submerged. It is starting to explode, so the chances of finding a lot of amber today are slim, “he said Wednesday, when the sea was very rough.
According to I. Osnac, guests from many countries (the United States, Brazil, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine) are interested and participating in this tour. However, the majority come from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Guide tips
How to distinguish if you found amber or stone? I. Osnač says that amber is light and warm. Therefore, it should be rubbed in the palm of your hand, and if you smell the slight smell of pine resin, you may be glad that you have discovered a piece of amber.
And if you want to make sure your souvenir vendor hasn’t cheated, the guide suggests tossing the stone into salty water.
“Amber floats in salt water,” he said.

If you decide to look only for amber, the guide suggests taking a grid and looking for darker waves and stretches of beach and seagulls. In places where sea sticks and algae have been dumped on shore, there is a greater chance of finding this stone.
Where should I look for amber? I. Osnač suggests looking for it in the Šventoji section towards Latvia, in the territory of the Regional Maritime Park, in Melnrage and in the Curonian Spit.
