The price of potatoes packed in a grid is currently € 1.19, compared to last year, when a kilogram of potatoes costs € 1.29. Heavy Lithuanian potatoes cost 0.89 euros per kilogram, and last year’s potato harvest – 0.27 euros, according to the report.

“Potato continues to be the most popular vegetable in our network. Since the beginning of the year, buyers have bought more than 5 million kilograms of Lithuanian potatoes, that is 10 percent over a year ago. Of course, with the start of spring everyone is expecting early potatoes and we were glad to offer them earlier this year. Last year this was hampered by the poor spring faced by potato growers. As a result, at that time last year we only had potatoes imported into our range, “says Marius Tilmantas, Head of Purchasing at Maxima.

Lithuanian harvest supply is growing

In addition to fresh potatoes, it is already possible to find fresh white cabbage grown in our country on the shelves of the Lithuanian retail chain, which this year cost less than last year: 0.79 euros, compared to 0.89 euros in 2019 After about a month, the first Lithuanian carrots are expected to appear. Until now, only imported products can be purchased in the commercial network.

According to M. Tilmantas, about 80 percent. The fresh food on offer is Lithuanian: “Seeing the high demand for vegetables, we ensure beforehand that as many goodies as possible reach the shops from the fields and greenhouses of the Lithuanian producers. In a week we will be waiting for Lithuanian raspberries in our stores, in a few weeks: blackberries and blueberries. ”

The Lithuanian strawberry season, which started this year in the last weeks of April, is forecast to continue at least until August, but there were years when strawberries grown in our country were enjoyed until October.

“Our range is largely determined by the climate. For example, this year frost was severely affected by apples in Poland; some growers are estimated to have lost up to 80 percent. Harvest. Last year and in Lithuania, the apple blossoms were frozen: the harvest was poorer and ended quite early. However, a good harvest of Lithuanian apples is expected this year, because we managed to avoid damage from natural elements, “says M. Tilmantas.
