The scammers introduced themselves to Panevėžys as cash inspectors – their grandmother trusted them.

Officials of the Criminal Police Property Crimes Investigation Board of the Panevėžys County Police Chief Commissariat, in cooperation with officials of the Prison Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, operationally detained a person suspected of Fraudulent embezzlement of 1,950 euros from an elderly woman in Panevėžys.

At the request of the prosecutor of the Panevėžys District Prosecutor’s Office who was leading the pre-trial investigation, on 6 August the court allowed the suspect to be detained for one month.

To the 78-year-old man, the 24-year-old con artist introduced himself as a police officer.

On August 5, around 2 pm, a stranger who arrived at the apartment of a 78-year-old woman, introducing himself as an officer, instructed her to verify her cash. The guy said the inspection is designed to find out if they are fake, but he can’t do it on the spot, so he has to accept the money. The woman, believing the man’s words, gave him the 1950 euros that he had at home.

On the same day, immediately after the incident, the 24-year-old suspect was arrested in Panevėžys County. LSC NNTV officials. He is suspected of acting in a group with other people who are currently under intense search. It is known that the suspects, calling by phone, were looking for elderly people, trying to give away information about their jewelry, savings, other properties.

The detainee has been repeatedly convicted of crimes against property and is currently the center of attention of officials.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched in accordance with article 182 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania. 2, (“Fraud”). It is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years. On 6 August, the prosecutor of the Panevėžys District Prosecutor’s Office leading the pre-trial investigation addressed the Panevėžys Chamber of the Panevėžys District Court, requesting that the suspect remain in pre-trial detention for one month. The court granted the prosecutor’s request.
