The Salantiškis farm, called Auksarankis, left a riddle: who was it preparing for?

6 tons: so much oil products have already been collected from a yard in Salantai. Environmentalists and Kretinga district leaders say construction has just started and excavations at the farm will continue for a long time.

“Every bucket excavated is still a find,” said Antanas Kalnius, mayor of the Kretinga district.

At that time, the people of Salantas continued to debate how what was happening in the farmhouse located in one of the main streets of Salantai had not felt for years.

Ieva, who opened the door to the journalist, said that the images seen in the media from the neighboring village were unexpected. The woman said she remembers an old man who died a few years ago. “Every Friday I would go to the Salantai market, where I would buy a bicycle. They were later dismantled. We don’t know where the details were placed, “the woman said.

Aldona, who lives in another house, said she was not surprised by the disappointing news. “It didn’t surprise me, because the man was a bunch, and rags and metal, but we didn’t think he had such an arsenal,” said the neighbor. He said he didn’t smell petroleum products either. “It just came to our attention then. As people accumulate, they accumulate things,” Aldona said.

Other Salantians recalled that the old man went to the Rietavas market on Sundays. He came back with bicycle wheels.

Later, workers managing the farm said they had found several dozen bicycle wheels.

The farm has oil storage facilities.

The farm, which is now packed with workers pumping pollutants from tanks and environmentalists, looks orderly. A small wooden house along the street and a farm behind. The bars are installed behind the windows of the house, but you can also see the curtains hanging from the street. However, the farm has not been inhabited for several years. The host died, according to the neighbors, five years ago, and the owner of the poor is cared for by relatives.

More than a week ago, Salantai residents were alarmed to see diesel-smelling pollutants attempting to drain into the Salanto River. A few days of operation began to find the source of the contamination. Various versions, excavations and pipes were investigated, and various techniques were used. After a few days of work, the eyes of the environmentalists turned to the house on Žemaitės street.

“There was no smell in the yard. Then we inspected the farm, opened the doors to the farm building. Inside was a pile of scrap metal, even a raised milling machine. Large tanks were visible underneath that scrap. It’s still difficult to say what volume. The liquid had escaped them, “recalled Ričardas Kašėta, head of the Kretinga Environmental Protection Inspectorate. The suspicions were confirmed: groundwater contamination actually flowed from this farm. After a thorough inspection of the house, it became clear that there are more tanks with possible petroleum products. Barrels of various sizes were buried underground, hidden in a farm building.

R. Kašėta is considering that it will not be easy to remove tanks from a farm building; They may have been installed before the roof of the farm building was covered.
Although it has already been clarified that the source of contamination is this uninhabited farm, it is still unknown how much pollutant has entered the environment and from which tank. One 200-liter tank was already empty, the others full.

Findings – various

When the farm began to be managed, many glass bottles with an unclear liquid were also found. Some contained alcohol, other dark chemicals.

Some 14 multi-volume tanks have already been found, some of which were about 200 liters. The entire glass container was loaded with the glass bottles found.

Workers who arrived on Wednesday also pumped petroleum products from four 200-liter tanks. Opening barrels turned out to be a less easy task. Attempts were made to open rusty barrels, which were suspected to have been underground for several decades, with crowbars and axes. Several barrels were emptied while they were still underground. The pumped petroleum products are transported for recovery.

Workers say they have found a variety of fluids: gasoline, diesel, heating oil and lubricants. “Aviation fuel in this barrel. I know this because I served in the military,” explained one of the workers.

According to R. Kašėta, the laboratory did not explain what exactly the liquid was in the individual containers. It has only been found to be a petroleum product.

“The elderly people explained to me that 66 gasoline was stored in a tank. We can only imagine from what era. I only remember 72 gasoline from my childhood,” said the interlocutor.

His eyes turned to the military base.

The Salantai elder, Kazimieras Galdikas, said it was difficult to say what the man who had saved those amounts was planning. 48 alkaline batteries were also found in the house.

“The man was smart. Could have repaired any device. There was a talented man. He had no suspicions. It was only when we were here looking for the source of contamination that another neighbor began to say that it was possible to buy fuel from this resident in the past, ”said the old man.

We started to consider where so much Salantiškės oil could have come from. It is speculated that the man could have been supplied by Soviet soldiers from a military base that operated in Šateikiai a few decades ago.

The locals still remember that trade relations with the military were in force at that time.

K. Galdik still has doubts about the owner’s idea to bury the tanks. Consideration is being given to what the man might prepare for: The experience of today’s workers shows that lifting 200-liter tanks and opening them is the work of several men.

“It just came to our knowledge then. But he didn’t use it. After all, there was a blockage. Maybe he thought there would be even blacker days,” the old man considered.

The damage is unclear, the work is just beginning

According to the mayor of Kretinga, A. Kalnius, it is still difficult to say what damage has been done to nature. It is already known that the flooring will also need to be changed. However, only after investigation will it be clear how much.

Workers who inspected the farm’s yard on Wednesday already knew that after vacuuming and lifting the tanks, they would have to begin intelligence work in the yard. A metal detector has discovered that there is also something hidden under the plums.

According to R. Kašėta, it will take a long time to eliminate the source of contamination. It will also be necessary to replace part of the drainage system.

The mayor of Kretinga assured that it is still difficult to say who will be responsible for the pollution that has endangered those around him. The hostess is older, and family caregivers testify that she knew nothing and suspected nothing.

These days, the body of elders also has to take care of supplying clean water to the people of Salantiai. At the moment, it is recommended not to drink water, use it only for domestic purposes.

Well water was analyzed: 5 responses from 21 samples were received; no contamination was found.
