Based on the results of the suspension and nutrient investigation, the increase in Nemunas water contamination is not recorded. However, the final results will be available from ecotoxicity, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and all other scheduled studies, reports the Environmental Protection Agency.
The concentration of suspended solids was only 7-12 mg / l with a limit value ≤ 25 mg / l. Nutrient concentrations such as total nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, phosphate phosphate, total phosphorus were also low. Comparing the data, the concentrations of these studied parameters are very similar to those determined after June 1 of this year. The objectives of Nemunas’ annual water monitoring would be to take samples.
For further monitoring of Nemunas water, June 18. (Thursday) and 22. (Monday) additional control samples will be taken at Druskininkai and Alytus.
When information appeared that the fish were dying in the Nemunas near Grodno, experts from the Environmental Protection Agency took samples of the Nemunas’ water in Alytus and Druskininkai. The first results of the water tests showed a decrease in the amount of oxygen in the water, but did not reach the minimum critical concentration limit. Such a decrease in oxygen in the water may have been caused by the high temperatures of the river water.
Results from other studies such as ecotoxicity, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, chlorophenols, polychlorinated biphenyls are slated for early next week.
