“Until now, little is known about the find. This place was already known for its increasingly excavated remains. They probably remained extinct in the 17th century. To the cemetery,” says archaeologist Dovilas Petrulis.
Underground history
In recent years, in the rebuilt and little-researched central part of Panevėžys, archaeologists are uncovering the secrets of the old town one after another.
Last summer, after tearing down the newer asphalt pavement on Respublikos street, near the junction with Vasario 16 street, and starting to prepare this place for reconstruction, the old pavement and part of the foundation of the house were opened, excavated in the 18th century. looking for the courtyard of a royal citizen, where the first lead seal of the Panevėžys post was found. And just a couple of hundred meters away, a year ago two ruined tombs were unearthed at the entrances to the District Municipality on Calle 16 de Febrero; the adult remains were unearthed at a depth of approximately 1 to 1.40 m.

According to historians, this is probably part of the tombs of the 17th-18th centuries. Another intriguing find was unveiled last year in Freedom Square, across from the city’s central entrance. There a pavement was excavated at a depth of 1.05 m, also reaching the 18th century. This part of town has long been Panevėžys’ biggest attraction – the markets were buzzing with activity, where farmers from all over the county gathered, and there were taverns around.
