Earlier this month, the leader of the Toots & Maytals group was induced into a coma by drugs. According to his publicist, the interpreter was admitted to the intensive care unit for shortness of breath. There were reports in the local media that the COVID-19 test results were awaiting the onset of symptoms.

News of the five-time Grammy nominee’s upset came a few weeks after his last known live appearance during Jamaica’s emancipation and independence celebrations in August.

A family report says Hibbert died Friday at West Indian University Hospital in Kingstone, Jamaica, surrounded by family.

Former boxer T. Hibbert was the leader, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer of the band, whose concerts sometimes ended with dozens of spectators dancing together on stage. According to many, he was also the most famous and extraordinary interpreter of the regio, characterized by such spirituality that he could sing a simple solfedista in such a way that it sounded like a hymn.
