The two-sided, pedestrian-safe Giedraičių Street is now reduced to a one-way street with separate bike and pedestrian paths. The street reconstruction designed by the Vilniaus Planas municipal company covered almost 1 km of the street section from Lviv to Žalgirio street and a 200-meter long section from S. Fino street, from Giedraičiai to Kalvarijų street. In these sections the sidewalks were changed to the spaces of the private plots, the entrances and accesses to the buildings were arranged, according to the municipal report.
Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius points out that Šnipiškės, one of the most interesting districts in Vilnius, is changing beyond recognition, discovering its unique face, showing both the past and modern Vilnius of this district.
“We are protecting the heritage of Giedraičių Street and its surroundings; the old houses of Šnipiškės, a kind of its old town, remain here, and we are renovating the network of streets in the area; If before the streets were reminiscent of a poor village in Lithuania, now they are comfortable for pedestrians and cyclists. by car. One of the main streets, Giedraičiai, has been turned into a one-way street with a comfortable sidewalk and a bike path that has never been here before. What connects all the streets that are currently being renovated in Šnipiškės, in addition to the fact that it will be possible to walk and bike everywhere, that they are all green, with greenery near the streets – the alleyways of trees will be green both in the Giedraičiai streets as in Kernavė ”, says the mayor of Vilnius, Remigijus Šimašius.
After the renovation of the street surface, a new bicycle lane was built and modern street lighting was installed, which meets modern requirements, and the engineering networks were renewed. Following the demolition of unauthorized fences on state land, pedestrian walkways were extended, allowing pedestrians to travel unimpeded to downtown or safely home. Small rest areas with benches and bicycle racks have been created along the paths, and litter bins have also appeared on the street.

To preserve the historical atmosphere of Skansen on Giedraičių street, some of the spaces formed near the street are fenced with new neat wooden fences (gates and gates are also installed after listening to the needs of residents), other free spaces are They are complemented by typical vegetation of the Šnipiškės neighborhood.
On Friday, the Vilnius city municipality invited local residents and employees of the surrounding offices to celebrate the new changes in Šnipiškės. During the event, the guests were invited to dine in a different way, after a cup of coffee and delicacies, and try the hiking or biking trails with music.
The road surface was also tested by extreme sports stars. Lithuanian most famous BMX rider David Budko and multiple European motorcycle stunt champion and Red Bull athlete Aras Gibieža stood next to their wheeled vehicles side by side and crossed the street on one wheel.
It is planned that in the future not only Giedraičių street, but also the rest of Šnipiškės will become attractive to the community, and the streets will be safe and comfortable for sustainable movement. Residents will be able to go down another renovated street, S. Fino, already later this year. Construction work also started on one of the most important streets in Šnipiškių: in the autumn of next year, the reconstruction of Kernavės street on the section from Žalgiris to Lvovo str.
The renovated streets will accommodate not only general pedestrian and car traffic, but some of them will also include bicycle traffic. The new bike path, which is scheduled to be built next year, will appear on the section of Žalgirio street from Tuskulėnai to Linkmenų str. and it will provide a more convenient connection for residents of Šnipiškės with other districts.
Even today, residents can enjoy the exceptional scenery of the Neris Senvagė Valley, where lakes that have survived the ice age have been preserved and groomed. In the future, the residents of Šnipiškės will have two more squares, which will provide the opportunity to gather for community events, actively play sports and relax surrounded by trees. A permit has already been issued for the construction of the so-called Dragon Meadow Square on Giedraičių-Krokuvos St., and a tender will be announced soon. At that time, the project for Šeškinė Square (Giedraičių-Kintų St.) will be handed over to experts for evaluation in the near future. Residents are expected to be able to enjoy these spaces within a year.
