The quarantine hit the poorest hard, and some workers became fully fired.

“We don’t think much about socially sensitive groups. There are strong names out there, it’s not clear who will really be there. The fact that a lot will go to infrastructure. It is very simple, because it is very easy to measure the result: I poured that street, I built, renovate such a building. By investing in one person, we will see the impact much later, “says A Adomavičienė on the Delfi Day program on EU support.

After quarantine, he said, some people face serious difficulties and are not happy with the economic recovery and rising prices they are talking about.

“There is an area like aviation that has closed completely and the stewardesses have lost their jobs. These are also women in their 50s who have never worked in any other job and need to think about where to work for a few years before retirement. Now they live temporarily from the benefits ”, says A. Adomavičienė.

Not a single story

The director of a network of poverty reduction associations says there are a number of similar stories. There are people who also get very low incomes: the average social support is only 85 euros. Also, there are still many people who don’t have a job and it is not so easy for them to return to the job market.

“The people with the lowest incomes and the self-employed are the ones who have suffered the most, since their incomes have decreased considerably. And, of course, families with children,” says A. Adomavičienė.

She agrees that there may be cases where people choose to live off benefits rather than work, but these are extreme cases.

“It just came to our attention then. If a person is alone, it may be worth getting € 200 now and not going to work. I would say there is a drop of water here. If it is a family, especially a single parent or a single mother, it would be worthwhile for him to go to work in any case “, A. Adomavičienė is convinced.

Quarantine opened the wounds

The quarantine revealed more problems, says A. Adomavičienė: “[Karantinas] Some old wounds and abscesses were opened, especially in the educational system, aspects of unequal opportunities, access to services, their lack were revealed. People who were already low-income people had difficulties and suffered the most. “

For some families, it was difficult to ensure that children learned at home.

“There was a lack of computers and physical jobs for children in families, especially those who are wealthier or live in small homes. Perhaps some children should go to educational institutions of those families,” considers A. Adomavičienė.

“We have noticed that some parents, even if they have a computer and a desk, may not necessarily help their children learn,” he says.

According to her, some state support measures also raise questions: “For example, a lump sum for pensioners. According to all forecasts, retirees will not be the group that will suffer the most. It is a fact that pensions in Lithuania are small, but a one-time payment of 200 euros will not solve the problem. “
