“This pre-trial investigation ended on October 8. The investigation ended after finding that no offenses under the Penal Code had been committed,” A. Latakas told reporters on Thursday.

Viktorija Raštutytė, representative of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed to the SNB that the investigation had been completed without the prosecutors finding a crime.

“Certain violations that did not give rise to criminal responsibility were reported to the responsible authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Protection,” he told BNS.

The investigation began in February this year after the lrt.lt portal published an investigation that the Klaipeda Port Authority had been discharging mercury containing mercury from a hazardous sludge site into the Curonian Lagoon without a permit for seven years.

The port, which rejected the allegations, later claimed that the Curonian Lagoon port was not polluting during storage of the contaminated soil at the storage site. According to him, only water from the same lagoon can enter the lagoon, no other chemical compounds are released into it.

Vidmantas Paukštė, who was the head of temporary management at the time, said the issue arose due to whether an additional pollution permit was needed during the works in 2018-2019. The port received the permit only earlier this year.

For his part, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Jaroslav Narkevičius, said in February that the pollution of the port is between 30 and 40 times lower than the limit requirements and said that the wastewater discharged into the Curonian lagoon by the port is even cleaner than water.
