According to the president of the country, G. Lastauskienė is a lawyer of the highest qualification, a jurist and theorist of law respected and recognized in the academic community, so her professionalism and solid experience in scientific, pedagogical and practical legal work will contribute to successful work in the Constitutional Court.

Following the rejection of this candidacy by the Seimas during the last term in April, G. Nausėda repeatedly mentioned that he saw no reason to seek a new CC candidate, as he did not hear any important arguments as to why G. Lastauskienė was not suitable .

According to the report of the Presidency, she has been actively involved in scientific and pedagogical activities since 1992, in 2002 she obtained a doctorate in social sciences, in 2003 G. Lastauskienė began working as an associate professor at the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University ( VU) and since 2013 it is the only one. Faculty professor, lecturing on legal theory to students of all forms and levels of study. In 2016 she was recognized as the best professor at the VU Law School.

Since 2003, G. Lastauskienė has practiced law and is a member of the LRT Council.

In April, the Seimas rejected the three CC judges. The then president of the Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis appointed the former CC Chancellor Ingrid Danėlienė, G. Nausėda – lawyer G. Lastauskienė, the Acting President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Sigita Rudėnaitė – the judge of this court Algis Norkūnas.

Then, as the main reproach to the candidates, it was mentioned that they are not specialists in constitutional law.

New Seimas spokesperson Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen has not yet decided what to provide to the CC judges, her spokesperson Paulius Žeimys informed BNS.

The Constitution provides that the Constitutional Court is renewed every three years for one third. The court consists of nine judges appointed for nine years and for one term only.

The mandate of the president of the Constitutional Court Dainius Žalimas and of the judges Gediminas Mesonis and Vytas Milius ended on March 19. They will remain in office until new judges are appointed.

The CC appoints and dismisses the Seimas.
