The Power of Social Media: Visitors Flooding a Farm in the Suburbs Grab Pumpkins and Admire the Dextros Grown Here

“We didn’t really plan it: we sow the land with pumpkins, because our cattle eat them. However, when we saw how much it had grown, we had to look at it creatively. So we decided that we needed to ‘do something’ and we came up with the idea to open Pumpkin Yard, “said A. Astromskienė.

Buy as much one pumpkin as dozens

Bubiškis, who raised four children, works alone on the farm: the children who started families live in Kaunas and Vilnius, so they only come to help their parents. Sometimes that help is not even physical: for example, on the social network Facebook, one of the children shared a temporary Pumpkin Yard created by their parents and invited everyone to come.

Later, the man did not hide, not expecting this publication to attract so much interest: News about the hospitable hosts of the Pumpkin Yard and the entertainment they offered quickly spread on the social network and people began to flow towards the farm.

When we saw how many pumpkins were growing, we had to look at the matter creatively.

All who arrive are greeted by the Astromskis themselves: they are treated with pumpkin juice, fresh sour pumpkin, as well as fried pumpkin pancakes from A. Astromskienė. The line also extends to the pumpkin throne installed by the hosts – both adults and children want to be immortalized here. The latter especially like to pick pumpkins and weigh them, that is, selling as many pumpkins as possible, and that is Astromsky’s main goal.

“You can bring pumpkins from anywhere, maybe you shouldn’t dismantle the throne. Although it is possible from him,” – assured V. Astromskis.

The owners of a pumpkin ask for 0.33 euros per kilo. So many pumpkins can really be bought for less than 2 euros.

It seems that the decision to sell an unexpectedly rich pumpkin crop in this way has paid off – almost every visitor leaves the farm with a pumpkin or two. “There was a florist who took a ton: he said pumpkins would benefit decorations,” said the hostess.

He didn’t speculate on how long Pumpkin Yard would run. “If people keep buying pumpkins at this rate, I’m afraid we won’t have Halloween,” he joked.

Dexter cattle are exceptional not only in the quality of the meat

Another hobby visitors to Astromskas enjoy is feeding the family-raised Dexster cattle. The trailers were installed on the farm in January 2018, when the owners said they had brought two pregnant cows with British pedigree and two of their daughters from Estonia. Now the farm already has 8 skills: 7 cows and 1 bull.

Deer are distinguished first by their small size: they are the smallest livestock in Europe. The Irish-bred breed is not yet popular, although the European Union Livestock Council considers it to be a recovering breed with considerable potential. According to the literature, these are long-lived animals, calves are born with a weight of 20 to 23 kg, 3-year-old adult bovines are between 95 and 110 cm tall and weigh between 300 and 350 kg. Despite their small size and weight, right-handed cows produce an average of 6-8 liters of milk per day. In Western Europe, this cattle is especially appreciated by gourmets: their meat is said to be marbled and very tasty.

However, according to A. Astromskienė, so far no skills have been sacrificed in Lithuania, although these cattle are not raised solely by Astromskas. They themselves do not yet have such plans: milking cows, milk and curd, butter or other dairy products made from them is enough for the whole family.

No skill has yet been sacrificed in Lithuania.

Like other cattle, dextrins feed mainly on grass and hay. But he is also very fond of apples and pumpkins. For this reason, to pamper its right-handers, Astromskas allocated part of the land to pumpkins this year. “You can see for yourself what came out: eating a dozen tons of squash for our eight cows and one bull would definitely be too much,” the farm owner smiled.

On the Astromsk farm, the horsemen have a lot of freedom: they spend most of their time on familiar pastures, where there is a waterhole and a water bath. They are fed in the barn so that they have a habit of returning in the afternoons, but they can choose where to spend the night: outdoors or indoors.

They announce that they are coming “home” loud and clear. Everyone who visits the Pumpkin Yard can see it for sure.

Live in the country and enjoy it

On their farm, Adelė and Vytautas fight one by two. They both created a Pumpkin Yard too – they brought in and laid out a ton of pumpkins. Is not difficult? “What are you! For me, this is a true spa and outdoor sports club”, the woman who guesses and speaks does not complain, and the vitamin bomb to distribute to all the guests of the Pumpkin Yard with the so-called juice pumpkin.

Farmers are in no rush to create big plans for the future. Until now, he calls himself a newcomer to the cultivation of dexterity who does not plan to expand intensely. Their goal is a naturally self-sufficient farm that sells offspring to producers like themselves. This is how Astromskai works. And although it still has pumpkins, it invites guests. You can find your way to them by visiting the Dexter Farm page.
