“How impressive October is, not to mention the thunderstorms that continue for a few days,” the group said.
Hurricanes are not common in Lithuania
Hurricanes were also seen in Lithuania this summer. As Egidijus Rimkus, professor at Vilnius University’s Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Head of the Department of Hydrology and Climatology, told tv3.lt at the time, this is a rather rare phenomenon.
“Hurricanes are quite rare. When I remember those cases, it seems like a few years ago, a whirlwind was recorded in Tirkšliai. Also, perhaps the most famous whirlwind was in the 9th century. In the 1990s, apparently around Širvintos, when even a tractor whirlpool got up. This is the most famous whirlpool in Lithuania, “recalled E. Rimkus.
According to the professor, hurricanes are usually accompanied by strong storms, rain and hail, because all these components are part of a process.
“Hail, hurricanes, gusts and stormy winds – components of the same process, of course, hurricanes are very rare, hail, gusts, rains – they usually happen at the same time. More precisely, these phenomena are characteristic of the same process, ”said the climatologist.
