Hume, a former leader of the Northern Catholic Social Democrats and Labor (SDLP), the most Catholic, won the Nobel Prize alongside David Trimble, leader of the Pro-British Ulster Junior Party, for helping them reach a Good Friday peace deal in 1998.
“We report with deep sadness that John died early in the morning after a brief illness,” his family said in a statement.
“John was a man, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, and a brother. He was well loved and his large family will miss him very much, “adds the report.
He says that Mr. Hume suffered from dementia and was cared for in a nursing home in Londonderry.
The former SDLP leader helped end three decades of bloody conflict in Northern Ireland between Catholic nationalist and Protestant youth communities, claiming nearly 3,600 lives.
The so-called “riots” ended in 1998 with the signing of the Good Friday Peace Agreement by Belfast, Dublin and London.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said it was “impossible to find words to adequately describe the scale and meaning of John Hume’s life.”
“He was one of the most prominent figures in Irish public life in the past century,” Martin wrote on Twitter. “His vision and perseverance have saved the country.”
The SDLP noted in its report: “We all live in Ireland as he imagined it: in peace and free to decide our own destiny.”
Mr. Hume’s family has indicated that the funeral will be organized in accordance with current government regulations, which severely limit the number of participants due to the threat of the spread of the new coronavirus.
“Then we realized that many could not be with us. We will organize memorial services and celebrate later,” the family said.
