The Ministry had prepared a negative conclusion for the amendments of the “peasant” Dainius Gaižauskas that were being examined in the Seimas, by which it proposed to establish that traffic signs inform drivers about automatic traffic control on road sections by “mobile offense recording systems”, that is to say, the so-called “tripods”.
“In our opinion, this would not contribute to road safety objectives, but on the contrary, it would help people who do not meet the established requirements to avoid liability. Police officers would also face practical enforcement problems, ie , they would have to monitor not only the mobile locking systems themselves, but also the erected signs, which are overturned and destroyed, to test whether the sign was mounted correctly or the driver could notice it, ”said Acting Interior Minister Rita Tamašunienė .
According to her, drivers in Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Estonia and other “advanced countries” are not warned about speedometers and other automatic traffic violation controls.
R. Tamašunienė highlighted that this decision was approved by the expert council responsible for road safety in October.
The members of the Road Safety Council took into account the good practices of the members of the European Union. In order to achieve our common vision of “zero roads”, ensuring universal road safety, it was decided that drivers should not be warned about mobile systems to record violations of the law, “said Acting Interior Minister Rita Tamašunienė.
Although decisions are usually made unanimously in the Government, this time the ministers voted and the majority did not agree with the conclusion, it was only supported by R. Tamašunienė herself.
The outgoing Minister of the Environment, Kęstutis Mažeika, reminded Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis that he was still working as Commissioner General of Police, for his decision “people, policemen, officials were taken out of the bushes”.
“And this probably caused a change in attitude and culture in the police service and it didn’t really change, there was no increase in accidents and speedometers,” said K. Mažeika.
According to him, the main objective of the meters is to limit the speed in the places most prone to accidents “and thus warn of those places.”
“In this case, I think we already got the tripods out of the bushes, the tripods should be too, because the examples really hurt,” added the politician.
“Please do not insult the officers performing their duties while patrolling the roads,” reacted R. Tamašunienė.
“I find it ridiculous the reasons why building a brand will be expensive for someone to overthrow it, steal it. Let’s see where we go, if we want to educate more or want to punish more. I believe that punishment is not the best means of education (…), I believe that such a draft decision should not be approved, ”said Acting Minister of Economy and Innovation Rimantas Sinkevičius.
S. Skvernelis, who abstained from voting on the conclusion, asked the Minister to “improve the conclusion”.
