Belarus unilaterally closed the border with Lithuania on Thursday afternoon without informing Lithuania and violating the procedures provided for in the bilateral agreement.

The note asks that this breach of the bilateral agreement be clarified and that it be guaranteed that such breaches are not repeated.

Belarus closed the border with Lithuania for passenger transport on Thursday afternoon, citing security requirements for the coronavirus.

Belarusians and foreigners were not allowed to enter the country, but the movement of cargo was not restricted.

Currently, according to Lithuanian border guards, Belarusians are entering the country again.

“It just came to our attention then. Belarusian border guards allow Belarusians to enter and leave their territory. (…) You see, yesterday there were cases where Belarus did not allow its citizens with permanent residence permits in Lithuania and Estonia, in general, yesterday there was so much confusion on the part of Belarus,

According to him, foreigners who have work visas, work contracts or residence permits in Belarus can also enter the country. No other foreigners are allowed.

“There are restrictions for foreigners who drive anyway. (…) There were cases where Ukrainian citizens traveled from Lithuania to Belarus and were not allowed to,” said R. Liubajev.

Belarus has been protesting against authoritarian President Aliaksandr Lukashenko for more than two months.
