The Minister of Agriculture Kęstutis Navickas approved the amended rules for marking and registration of pets, which facilitate the marking and registration of pets.
Cats, dogs and ferrets born before May of this year and not tagged with chips must be tagged before May of the following year. Animals born this May and beyond must be marked within 4 months of arrival. Only marked and registered animals can be transferred to another owner or keeper.
“There are still too many animals in Lithuanian shelters that are not marked or registered and there is no possibility to return them to the owner. The welfare and care of the animals is a very important public priority today. Everyone should treat their pets as responsible manner, marking and registration are one of those responsibilities, ”says Minister of Agriculture K. Navickas.
According to the rules for marking and registration of pets approved by the Minister, from now on, residents who have completed special training will also be able to mark and register animals. With a tagged cat, dog, and ferret chip, the markers will immediately enter the pet’s data into the Pet Registry.
For example, animals will now be able to be marked and registered not only by veterinarians, but also by breeders themselves, animal care facilities, or even animal salon owners.
What is new is also that breeders will have to notify the Animal Registry of all mating dates of females and males, artificial insemination of females, to know if these animals are not used too often for mating. When registering cats, dogs and ferrets, breeders will need to provide their mother number if registered.
Pets transferred from the European Union and imported from third countries will be registered by the territorial units of the State Food and Veterinary Service.
Any owner of a cat, dog or ferret whose animal has not yet been tagged should immediately contact a veterinarian or tagger, bring their pet with them and present an identity document and have a tagging and registration service in place.

Good news for animal keepers
Those who most expected these changes were probably the employees of animal shelters and animal care organizations. The costs of the labeling and registration service for organizations that live solely on human support and charity are considerable, so representatives of these organizations, after completing special training, will be able to perform this procedure for animals in shelters themselves. themselves, thus saving money. Currently, tagging an animal costs between € 15 and € 20.
Unmarked animals found that have escaped and lost must be marked and recorded in the Animal Registry before being returned or released to new owners.
Danutė Navickienė, director of the public organization Beglobis, evaluates the message about the possibilities that the employees of the shelter mark the pets in a very positive way.
“It just came to our notice then. We are very pleased with the change in the animal tagging system: we will finally be able to tag the animals ourselves. This will save not only money for procedures, but also time and reduce other costs; there will be no need to waste the time of veterinarians ”, says D. Navickienė.
