NASAMS is the most widely used mid-range air defense system in NATO countries, and is also used to protect the White House.
According to the military, the purchased system is the latest. Third-generation NASAMS users are currently only Lithuanians and the Norwegian Army from the system manufacturer.
The purchased system consists of fire control centers, missiles, communication equipment, purchase of these modernized systems and currently used in the RBS-70 short-range air defense system of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
Both systems will be integrated into a common Lithuanian air defense shield.
Specialist training to work with the new system according to the methodology and programs developed by the Norwegian Army and Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace already started in Norway at the end of last year.
Additional training will move to Lithuania, where Norwegian specialists will continue to work with Lithuanian soldiers in the Air Defense Battalion itself. Staff training is slated to be completed by 2021 and weapons integration into NATO’s unified air defense system will begin.
Lithuania purchased a medium-range air defense system from NASAMS under an agreement signed between the Ministry and Norwegian company Kongsberg on October 26, 2017, worth LTL 110 million. euros
