In mid-March, Kaunas residents regretted that the first private cafe “Kregždutė”, which had been loved by many generations in Kaunas, was closed. Then it became clear that they were going to move her from the sentimental building to another place. Four months after this news, the 35-year-old cafe building is compared to the ground.
News that the legendary cafe building was being demolished soon spread on social media.
“The Kregždut café cafe, which has been operating in Žaliakalnis for 35 years, is being demolished …! One of the oldest cafes in Kaunas has had visitors for generations (never mind!) … It was probably the only meeting place of the Greenlandic people (it doesn’t matter!) … “Kregždutė” was the only cafe in the Ąžuolynas district, where park lovers met in winter and summer (it doesn’t matter!) … “- he said the architect Audrys Karalius in those words to the uploaded video that records the demolition works.

Internet users did not hide their disappointment that these memorable places, which are familiar to almost all Kaunas residents, will eventually disappear.
“Destruction of Kaunas !!!” – Nomeda said in a straight line. It was seconded by Mantas, who said that no one else would be as dear to the heart as the old cafe.
“Whatever is built there will no longer make sense,” the man wrote.
However, some Kaunas residents shared a completely different opinion.
“I used to go there often, but without feelings. The interior: Gorbachev’s cooperative modernism. Even more so when the cafe itself did not close, it just moved. What you have in the old, you will probably also have in the new, ”Zigmas tried to bring at least some optimism.
Memorable dates
The mood of Kaunas residents was similar when news of their relocation spread.
Then the feeling spread that life was constantly boiling over in the first private cafe “Kregždutė” established in Kaunas, which was the highlight and attraction of all Žaliakalnis. The people of Kaunas assured that they had many memorable conversations here, caught the attention of a girl they liked and had lunch.

Moved to another place
Even then, in March, we wrote about the reasons for the closure of Swallow, founded in 1986. Representatives of the restoration establishment indicated that only the building would be closed and the activity itself would move to another address.
From now on, “Kregždutė” operates at Sporto str. 3. Here you will find another catering establishment “Jėgainė”. This place is right next to the old one (Sporto str. 1), where the old cafe building is located. Loyal visitors from Exhibition Hill will have to walk a little further to the new location.

The representatives of the legendary cafe did not say much and said that all the shareholders decided to move to other facilities. Subsequently, the representatives indicated that the city plans to demolish the old building, which obscures the view of the monument of S. Darius and S. Girėnas.
“It was ordered to move or leave as soon as possible for December 31, 2020, because the excavation work of the square will begin,” commented the representatives of the cafe on the social network Facebook.
It will manage all the space
The Kaunas city municipality previously told the kauno.diena.lt portal that it was planned to manage the accesses of Sporto Street and Ąžuolynas, so it was decided to abandon the elements built during the Soviet era.
City representatives announced that the architects who prepared the pre-design proposals do not see the Soviet-era buildings on the new Sporto Street: concrete retaining walls with benches, a pump station and a side building.
“Abandoning these unnecessary buildings would change the urban composition of the space and access to Sporto Street from Parodos Street would become more open. The abandonment of the walls would open up the view of Ąžuolynas, create a direct visual connection between the park and the square, ”said architect Tomas Kuleša.
According to the architect, the pumping station does not perform any function to this day. During the Soviet era, a fountain was installed next to it, but when it disappeared, the pump station lost its meaning. Removing it would open access to the park.
“When designing the space, we treated it like an entrance to the Oak. We believe that the best cover would be the granite blocks, on which it would be comfortable to walk. We have planned that the pads are not too slippery. All the elements of the small architecture and communications (bike racks, rain and water collection system, electric poles, benches, garbage cans) will be new ”, said T. Kuleša.
