The lake, shrouded in gruesome legends, still raises many questions: why are there no fish in the extremely clean water and no birds flying around.

The lovely boardwalk is perfect for visiting people, but wildlife doesn’t like this place – birds don’t sing here, fish don’t swim in water, beasts of the forest avoid the lake too.

The clear and abysmal lake is one of the most legendary places in the country of the blue lakes of Latgale. Devil’s Lake is located near Aglona in the Engraver’s Silo Basin, which is located in the Skeltuova district of the Kraslava district.

It is said that this lake, located in a funnel-shaped well, has no bottom, although scientists have taken and measured it, its depth reaches 17 meters and the water is so clear that in some places you can see up to 12 meters . There is no stream or spring in it, so there are no streams, flora and fauna in the lake. Neither caterpillars nor water lilies grow here. Even the demons and beasts of the forest avoid Lake Devil. It is said that there are many snakes on the shores and fish are rarely found here except for the oily perch.

There is a version that Lake Devil was born when a cosmic body fell. Locals believe that it could have been a meteorite, and wildlife doesn’t like the lake due to the amount of mercury found in it.

For people, it is a great place to have picnics in the nature – there are tables, benches and fireplaces – you can go out, bake food, relax, but the locals do not like this lake, they do not live around it. Even the drowned ones found in this lake are believed to have been swallowed by the devil. However, the mysterious name attracts many visitors both then and now.

In 1977 a 53 hectare protected area was established around the lake. Most of this protected area is made up of pine forests. The surface of the earth is mountainous here. The most valuable object in the protected area is Devil’s Lake. The region was established to preserve the unique lake system and the surrounding landscape.
