“Peter Madsen tried to escape,” a Copenhagen policeman told AFP.
Police confirmed on Twitter that Madsen, surrounded by police officers, had been “arrested and removed from the scene.”
There were reports that the man had threatened the police with an explosive device or weapon, but these were not confirmed.
According to BT, Madsen left the prison by taking hostage and threatening prison staff with an object resembling a gun. The newspaper cited witnesses who claimed that he had managed to get out in a white minibus, which was later seized by police.
Photos from the scene show Mr. Madsen sitting on the grass next to a road next to a wall that creeps a few hundred meters from the prison, with two officers lying next to him, pointing service weapons at him.
Madsen, famous in Denmark for building submarines and rockets, was found guilty in 2018 of murdering, sexually assaulting a journalist and cutting up his remains.
In Denmark, life imprisonment is in practice equivalent to 16 years in prison, but it re-evaluates convicts to determine whether they could pose a risk to society if released. If so, your detention can be extended.
The court ruled unanimously that the defendant lured the 30-year-old woman into a self-made submarine, promising to give her an interview that the journalist had been trying to secure for several months.
In court, Madsen denied killing Wall, claiming he was killed in an accident on his submarine, but admitted to cutting up the wreckage and dumping it in the Baltic Sea.
In a documentary released in September, however, he pleaded guilty to murder for the first time.
“There is only one culprit: me,” Madsen said in the documentary.
On August 10, 2017, K. Wall, an award-winning journalist, boarded Mr. Madsen’s submarine to conduct an interview for his article.
An autopsy showed that K. Wall likely died of suffocation or a sore throat, but the remains were buried and investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of death.
