Polish diplomats in the Middle East and Africa are speaking to local media and the most popular communication channels are urging people not to try to enter the EU illegally through Belarus, said Marcin Przydacz.
Several migrants, mostly from Iraq, recently died of exhaustion while trying to get from Belarus to Poland through a forested and swampy area. Polish diplomats are also speaking with government officials in the migrants’ countries of origin, informing them and asking for warning and protection from their citizens, Przydacz said.
“We want to help these people, therefore [vykdome] diplomatic activity in these countries … and we warn that they could become victims of fraud, “he added.
EU member Poland and Lithuania have recently been under pressure to migrate across their borders to Belarus. They accuse the Belarusian government of offering free tourist visas and deliberately misinforming people so they can find refuge in the EU by illegally crossing borders with neighboring countries.
Claiming that Minsk is taking revenge on Western sanctions in this way, the Polish and Lithuanian governments have sent thousands of troops and straight-cut wire barriers to the Belarusian border.
Humanitarian organizations and the influential Polish Catholic Church criticize the government for turning back migrants, including families with children.
