M. Ėmužis, professor at the Vilnius University Faculty of History, received a grant for the project “The Fifth Column in Independent Lithuania in 1919-1940: the Communist Underground and Its Networks”.
The aim of his research is to investigate the conflicts between the leaders of the Lithuanian Communist Party, the formation of blocs and their influence on the formation of the Soviet Lithuanian administration after the occupation.
Upon withdrawing the scholarship, M. Ėmužis said that it allows him to contribute to the creation and maintenance of the state.
“Perhaps by looking at the difficult past, we can look at the present more clearly. Unlike the interwar period, we are members of a strong alliance, we can be justifiably proud that, as a state, we become more and more of a role model. For others, we have a more solid foundation for democracy. And what to say that it is no longer necessary to unite two totalitarian regimes, which has distorted the relationships between people in such a way that one has decided the fate of the other or even the issue. of life, ”he said.
“If there is a lesson to be learned from history, it is that there should be no recurrence of an era, situation or government that decides for whom to live and for whom to die,” said the historian.
The Independence Scholarship is awarded annually to young researchers in the humanities and social sciences for important research for strengthening the statehood of Lithuania, related public activities and scientific outreach works, and for the research project submitted for the scholarship.
The State Independence Scholarship is awarded on March 11 of each year, the day of restoration of the independence of Lithuania.
