The Department of Environmental Protection confiscated a hybrid of a dog and a wolf, the Luna, that was illegally kept and that was delivered to an animal shelter by a natural person from the Wild Forest animal organization. Because it was suspected to be a wild animal, DNA tests were performed to make sure Luna was a first-generation wolf-dog hybrid. Under established legislation, the descendants of four generations of wolfdog hybrids are considered wild animals across Europe.
The Wildlife Law of the Republic of Lithuania prohibits the crossing of wild animals for purposes other than research and is only allowed with the permission of the Environmental Protection Agency. Maintaining, breeding, breeding hybrids of wild animals, their young and animals in which hybrids have been used is prohibited.
In accordance with the Rules for the Use of Wild Animals, hybrids may be kept in captivity: 1) when these animals are crossed for research purposes and with the permission of the Environmental Protection Agency to use wild animals for crossing; 2) when these animals were acquired before 2009. September 1; 3) when fur animal hybrids are maintained and bred for specialized purposes on specialized farms.
It is for these reasons that there is no legal possibility to transfer a hybrid of a wolf and a dog to a natural person or to leave them in the care of an animal shelter. The AAD took all possible measures to address the hybrid’s future destiny and find the best solution. AAD with the public institution “Aid for Wild Animals” and Brigita Kymantaitė, director of the Lithuanian Organization for the Protection of Animal Rights, Lunai found a new home in a bear and wolf reserve in Germany.
The alternative reserve of wolves and bears in the Black Forest (Alternativer Wolf – und Bärenpark Schwarzwald) stands out in excellent conditions for wildlife and covers 10 hectares of forest. Animals have the opportunity to live as in nature.
“Luna’s house is nature and forest. Living with people was limited by her instincts and natural behavior. It should be noted that the genes of a wild animal are extremely strong, so keeping a hybrid of wolf and dog can make them people suffer aggression. For animals, as creatures of nature, we must feel respect, not force them to live against our nature. Freedom is as important for animals as it is for humans, but they cannot tell us that in words ”Says Olga Vėbrienė, director of AAD.
