“Due to the Festival of the Sea, we will definitely see an increase in the number of cases in the coming weeks,” an NVSC spokeswoman told BNS on Tuesday.
According to her, the situation in the Klaipėda region is already the worst in the country, and some of the people who went to the festival did not follow the safety recommendations: they gathered closely and did not wear masks.
The traditional Fiesta del Mar took place in the port city for three days last weekend. While epidemiologists were concerned about the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in the region, the organizers of the event promised to focus more on security during the celebration.
Almost half of the active outbreaks are in the Klaipeda region
According to D. Razmuvienė, there were 29 active outbreaks of the disease in Lithuania last week, which is almost double the previous week, when there were 16. Almost half of the 13 outbreaks were detected in Klaipėda counties.
The epidemiologist says that the higher incidence of diseases in the western part of the country is associated with greater mobility when going on vacation by the sea. Furthermore, younger people predominate among the newly infected.
“It just came to our knowledge then.” Currently, the majority of patients between the ages of 15 and 34 are registered, “said a representative from the NVSC.
According to the Department of Statistics, the lowest number of vaccinated people in this age group, excluding children, was 48.1% in the 25-34 age group and 46% in the 16-24 age group. population.
Mistaken for a cold
An NVSC spokeswoman says most people remain infected in their families, but epidemiologists worry that more than half of people do not know where this may have happened.
“About 57 percent. People don’t know where they might get infected,” he said.
The epidemiologist emphasizes that the symptoms are also difficult to distinguish at this time because people think they are simply colds.
“Because the delta variant dominates, it has supplanted the alpha variant, so the symptoms so far are very similar to the symptoms of colds. There is a runny nose, fever, headache, sore throat. But those symptoms, which were characteristic of the first variety (loss of taste, smell), have not yet been registered ”, explained D. Razmuvienė.
According to the doctor, although there is currently a renewed interest in the vaccine, vaccination sites should be increasingly mobile, especially to vaccinate as many chiefs as possible.
“We need more mobile points. There are a large number of elderly people who have not been vaccinated and the risk for them is the highest,” explained D. Razmuvienė.
According to the Department of Statistics, just over half of the population over the age of 80 has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
