On Thursday evening, the Tverečius border guard officers of the SBGS Vilnius border team detained 8 people who had just crossed the border from Belarus illegally in the village of Lekiškės in the Ignalina district. 7 of them had documents of Iraqi citizens. A man had no documents and also presented himself to an Iraqi, reports SBGS.
The foreigners were handed over to the Tverečius firebreak. They applied for asylum in Lithuania.
Detainees will be tested for COVID-19 and aliens will be isolated pending the results. The circumstances of the event are being clarified, it is being investigated.
This year, 405 illegal immigrants from Belarus tried to enter Lithuania. Most of them are Iraqi citizens. That number is five times higher than it was in 2020.
Last year, 81 of those foreigners were arrested. 2019 46 illegal immigrants were caught by border guards in 2018; – 104.
With the recent increase in the number of such cases, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, border guards from other units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. In addition, forces from the Public Security Service, the Riflemen’s Union and other institutions came to the aid of the border guards.
