On the last day of the Dakar Rally, with the first riders already on their way to the finish line, the organizers of the Dakar Rally announced the sad message. Pierre Cherpin, a 52-year-old Frenchman, died on a plane from Jeddah to France. He suffered an incident and was seriously injured on the seventh-speed section from Hail to Sakaka.
After traveling 178 km from the start, the motorcyclist fell and was found unconscious. The Frenchman was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Sakaka. He was diagnosed with a head injury, artificial coma, and underwent surgery. When the condition stabilized, it was decided to take the corridor to the Lille Hospital in France. But on the way home, the athlete died.
Pierre Cherpin made his Dakar debut in 2009, when the race was first held in South America. Later, it also started in 2012. On both occasions it did so in the Original by Motul category, the so-called “singles” classification, in which athletes compete without technical support equipment. Both the first and second time the Frenchman reached the finish line successfully. His third outing was in 2015, but he didn’t finish until then due to a motorcycle engine failure. This year was his fourth start at Dakar, as well as in the singles category. On the eve of the accident, Pierre Cherpin was ranked 77th in the motorcycle category.
“I am an amateur. I don’t want to win. I just want to discover new lands because I have never had the opportunity to do so before. I love riding a motorcycle, living with this passion and the desire to get to know each other, ”said Pierre Cherpin, who drove the 111th Husqvarna motorcycle before the start.
The Dakar organizers expressed their sincere condolences to the athlete’s family, relatives and friends.
