According to the Euroleague regulations, the basketball players of Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade had to do a test three days before the game in Kaunas, that is, on Monday, before the match with Žalgiris.
Situation | COVID-19 tested |
The visiting team | 3 days before the game |
Local team | 2 days before the game |
After the match | In the next 2 days |
Euroleague Double Week | Before the first game and after the second in the usual way |
15 minutes Sources report that after the first test on Tuesday, four cases of coronavirus were recorded in a Serbian camp: two players and two members of the coaching staff fell ill.
The re-evaluation showed two new cases in the Crvena Zvezda club. Several other Belgrade basketball players felt symptoms of the virus on Tuesday night.
Due to the current and possible spread, the Euroleague doctor decided that the match was dangerous and should be postponed.
The Euroleague regulations establish that if due to coronavirus circumstances a team cannot register at least 8 players, the match will be postponed.
Taking into account the schedule of Crvena Zvezda and Žalgiris and the Euroleague broadcast schedule, the Euroleague will look for a suitable day for both teams and offer it for the approval of both clubs. If, for objective reasons, this does not apply to one of the teams, they must agree on another date.
According to the Euroleague COVID-19 protocol, this should be the closest possible date.
The protocol stipulates that suspended games must be played before the end of the regular season (with exceptions). The Euroleague regular season ends on April 13.
The Euroleague regulates that Crvena zvezda and Žalgiris matches can be postponed three times. If the match is not tied three times and the match is still not played, the team that did not duel for the first time gets a technical loss of 0-20.
By the way, Crvena zvezda, the culprit of the postponed meeting, is responsible for all party organization costs incurred by Žalgiris.

You will play more often than every three days.
This is the worst time for Žalgiris to postpone the match.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the rival field, Kaunas residents had to postpone several LKL matches. Only Alytus Dzūkija (12) played fewer LKL games for Žalgiris (15) this season.
Žalgiris’s schedule is so busy that without LKL’s intervention, Žalgiris will only have a few free dates to receive guests from Belgrade. Based on both teams’ schedule, this could be February 22. or March 16.
The Lithuanian champions will likely need to negotiate with LKL to change the schedule and help insert postponed Euroleague matches.
From February 6. match with Kėdainiai “Nevėžis-Optibet”, Žalgiris will play 24 games in the 66 days leading up to the end of the Euroleague regular season, ie more frequently than every three days.
The solution – soon
According to Euroleague practice, the clubs agree on a new match date in a few days. Sometimes a new date is confirmed on the day of a match that has not yet taken place. The fate of the meeting between Žalgiris and Crvena zvezda in Kaunas is expected to become clear in a week.
It is interesting that Crvena zvezda, which foresees a change in its composition, will only be able to count on those players who signed up in the club’s application for Thursday’s game in Kaunas in the postponed match against Žalgiris. This means that if a new player joins the Belgrade team in the near future, they will not be able to participate in the postponed match at the Žalgiris Arena.
“Žalgiris” with 13 wins and 10 losses in the Euroleague ranks 7th. Crvena zvezda with 7 wins and 16 penultimate errors seventeenth.
