Last Sunday, a house fire broke out in the Alytus district. The disaster indelibly marked the lives of two families: they lost more than their homes, a young woman died and three children were left without a mother. A relative, Ieva, who agreed to tell the journalists of the kauno.diena.lt portal about the fateful May 23, said that the disaster that caused the fire occurred after a possible explosion of a gas cylinder.
“Everything happened very suddenly: the house caught fire. Inside at that time was the housewife’s brother, my cousin and his fiancée. He tried to save her, but could not do so due to a too strong fire: the woman died in the fire and her cousin suffered severe burns and is now being treated in the hospital. At first, her condition was difficult, but to my knowledge it is gradually improving, “Ieva opened.
Speaking about the events before the accident, the interlocutor said that her cousin’s family, having returned from abroad, had moved to the house in Alytus district, Užupiai village, very recently, at the beginning of May. And last Sunday a cousin visited her with his fiancée. In the event of a tragic disaster, as mentioned, the two were inside the house and everyone else, including the children, remained safe because they were spending time outside at the time.
Although the reaction was incredibly quick, when not only firefighters but also neighbors rushed to the rescue, the house and everything in it was completely burned down. “The half-sister was left only with the clothes she was wearing. There was still a pram and a car; everything else caught fire. Three children were orphaned: a fourteen-year-old son from a deceased woman and an eight-year-old girl from a previous relationship, and she and my cousin’s daughter, who was only two months old. At the moment, both my cousin, who has lost her home, as well as her cousins, and my cousin’s daughter, are staying with her sister ”, the interlocutor opened.
It will take time for them to get used to this situation and to be able to start shaping their lives again.
Ieva was saddened to say that the people of the rural community of Užupis extended their first helping hand to their relatives in distress: they helped collect the most necessary things.
“It is still very difficult for my cousin and my cousin to lose not only their home, but also their loved one. It is an indescribable feeling, accompanied by stress and shock, because lives have changed in an instant. I think it will take time for them to get used to this situation and being able to start rebuilding their lives, ”Ieva said sensitively.
The woman regretted that the family urgently needs the financial support of people of good will at this time so that the burned houses can be rebuilt in the future. Volunteers from the Užupis village community have already organized relief and are clearing the rubble from the house.
As previously announced on the portal, on May 23 at 12.35 a notice was received about the fire in Alytus district, Užupiai village. He died in 1984. A woman born in 1988 and a man born in 1988 were hospitalized for burns. According to preliminary data, the fire broke out when the gas cylinder exploded. A pre-trial investigation was launched to determine the cause of death.
