According to the British newspaper Financial Times, I. Šimonytė believes that the policy of the EU and the United States towards Russia and China will be more consistent than during the year of Donald Trump. According to her, this is also very important for Lithuania.
“The most important thing for my country is that there would be very little or no situation in which we would have to decide which arguments are better: the European Union or the United States,” I. Šimonytė told the Financial Times.

The Financial Times also singled out Lithuania as the first country to publicly withdraw from the Central and Eastern European negotiations with China in the “17 + 1” format.

Commenting on the decision on this format, I. Šimonytė stated that Lithuania does not see much benefit from this format. According to her, this group of countries, compared to the EU as a whole, does not have such a significant influence on the negotiations with China.

“It would be better to express my concern through Brussels,” said I. Šimonytė.
