Slovenia’s men’s basketball team, which played in the Olympics for the first time, finished fourth in the tournament and returned home empty-handed.
However, such a performance by Luka Dončičius and the company at the Tokyo Games impressed the entire country and a large group of fans loudly greeted their beloved players at the Ljubljana airport.
“The worst part of this trip is our last defeat. We really wanted to win a medal. After a sleepless night, we realized that we had achieved a lot at the Olympics,” said L. Dončičius, thanking the fans.
The Slovenian summer was long, as they started their journey from the national team in Lithuania, where both teams from Group B stumbled, won the semi-final fight and defeated the Lithuanians in the final. They then won all three Group C matches, outscoring the Germans in the quarterfinals, but fell to the French in the semi-finals and defeated the Australians in the small final.
