According to her, the project of demolition of chimneys of 250 and 150 meters high is unique in the region, since the dismantling of structures of such high height has not been carried out neither in Lithuania nor in the Baltic countries.

“Studies carried out a few years ago have shown that these two chimneys are too exposed to the destructive effects of the environment and can no longer be considered safe. It is not rational to invest in the repair and necessary maintenance of the disused chimneys, so it was decided to dismantle them ”, says Rimgaudas Kalvaitis, Managing Director of Ignitis Production.

The chimney dismantling work is carried out by the Vilniaus BDT company, which won the public tender. To keep things running smoothly, the contractors work with partners from the Czech Republic. The value of the project is 1.89 million. EUR (excluding VAT).

Two of the three power plant stacks have been completely obsolete since 2014, when the first six power plant units, built in 1962-1968, were preserved and dismantled.

Design work and preparations for the dismantling of chimneys were carried out last year and the inner layer of the chimneys was dismantled.

Once these demolition works have been completed, a 250 m high chimney will remain in the complex, through which the combustion products of power units 7 and 8 will be removed. The reconstruction of this chimney was carried out in 2014.

Units 7 and 8 of the reserve plant will guarantee the need for a tertiary active power reserve of 482 MW this year.
