The end of the age: there will be no more bicycle lanes on Vilnius’ sidewalks

The old “bike lanes” – lanes lined with sidewalk lines – not only created the conditions for unnecessary conflict between bicyclists and pedestrians, but they certainly did not meet the quality standards set for today’s cycling infrastructure.

The narrow sidewalks were divided in half, so there was not enough room for pedestrians or cyclists. From now on, the sidewalks will return to pedestrians who will no longer have to worry about cyclists maneuvering nearby.

Although it took a long time to find the best solutions for the high-quality removal of such “cartoon” routes, it was finally handled. Plush workers erased more than 15 km of markings throughout the month.

From now on, the sidewalks will return to pedestrians who will no longer have to worry about cyclists maneuvering nearby.

For cyclists, we remind you that it is still possible to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk, either in general pedestrian traffic or, depending on the category and street load, on the road with cars.

The construction of new bike lanes that meet high quality standards will also continue. By 2023, they will connect to a single, uninterrupted network. The old “cartoon” roads, where it will not be possible to build a new red asphalt road, will be replaced by quiet traffic areas.
