The driver, who got lost near Lazdijai, was forced to open the truck’s hideout to customs officers.

Around 7 pm While patrolling the Lazdijai area, officers from the Kaunas Territorial Customs Violation Prevention Division stopped and inspected the cars. Officials were also interested in the Renault cargo truck (with Belarusian numbers), whose driver, a Belarusian national, was detained and told to take the empty cargo to Kaunas to collect the cargo. Customs officials were a bit surprised as the car was heading towards Lazdijai, the border with Poland.

When the cargo portion of the truck was opened, it appeared empty at first glance, but the walls and roof of the truck were seen to have been redesigned, with the addition of wood paneling from the inside.

What was even more surprising was that the wooden panel on the side wall also covered the area where there were side doors on the outside. When the driver was asked to open said door, he was very excited and could not (or did not want to) open it: he said that he could not open here, that he could not find the keys to the door here.

Finally, the keys were found, and when the door was opened, customs officials saw a hiding place in the front of the van’s wall, where they found 3,750 packages of Belarusian cigarettes, NZ Gold and Queen Menthol. A detailed inspection of the truck’s walls revealed that they were also “full” of cigarettes (the final number of cigarettes seized due to the complex dismantling work is not yet known).

The driver was detained, then detained for a month by decision of the Kaunas District Court. The Kaunas Branch of the Criminal Customs Service has launched a pre-trial investigation into the illegal disposal of excise goods, which is led by the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
