Vilma Traškaitė-Juškevičienė, anesthesiologist-resuscitator of the Kaunas Clinics, told the news portal tv3.lt about the last days of the patients with Covid-19.
“I got caught up in a case, it ended sadly. I remember a patient I treated for a long time while she was lying in the therapy room. But her condition did not improve and then we had to transfer her to intensive care. Her condition and course of the illness was very severe, we have applied a variety of oxygen delivery methods.
You are like making friends with that person. It was very stuck that the person was conscious, fully aware of his condition, we put a lot of effort, but the disease was stronger. Those things are very sad, ”said the doctor.
Covid-19 patients are often aware and understand everything
The doctor of the Kaunas clinic, V. Traškaitė-Juškevičienė, pointed out that often Covid-19 patients who count the last days of life are conscious, understand everything perfectly and follow the indicators by themselves, do everything possible to overcome the insidious disease.
“Often Covid-19 patients are aware and understand everything. They have difficulty breathing, but fully understand their condition. They often control the metrics that we measure and find out for themselves that they are not good.
When it is necessary to go to the intensive care unit, we consciously transfer them and say that more intensive treatment is needed. If you spend a lot of time, you already know what the oxygen saturation should be (oxygen saturation in the blood – aut. past.) what indicators should be so that everything is fine.
In the therapy department, we put monitoring tools in and they breathe and see the situation themselves. We say that if SpO2 is 97 percent, it will be good, if it is less than 90 percent, it will be bad. Then they become allies and help us themselves. Patients try to cooperate if we tell them to breathe slower and deeper, then they really try to do it to improve the condition, ”said the doctor, noting that it is very sad when all efforts are made, but the disease keeps winning.
Doctors anxiously await the holidays of the big year
According to the doctor, they are eagerly awaiting the next big year holidays or they simply will not bring a wave of new patients. It’s scary to talk to residents that they will still try to communicate with their loved ones despite strict quarantine restrictions.
“We are looking forward to the holidays. The managers calculate and plan to have enough capacity and beds. We place great hope in the quarantine restrictions that will help people understand and spend the holidays in peace at home without traveling or visiting loved ones. .
But you hear that people are planning to cheat, say something just to reach out to relatives during the holidays despite quarantine restrictions and exit bans.
It is certainly not difficult to lie or cheat someone, but it should be understood that such restrictions are not without reason, and we see the reason every day: almost 3.5 thousand. Infections I urge people to remain calm with their families during the holidays and not to try to outwit the officials and become carriers of the virus ”, urged the doctor.
The doctor pointed out that it is very sad that there are still people who still doubt the existence of the coronavirus.
“It is very unfortunate that some people doubt it and think so. I would love to invite you to our guests so they can get a closer look at how we work. I imagine this thing is far enough away and unfamiliar to people, that’s why they talk like that.
But sometimes, even when you are lying in the therapeutic room with other Covid-19 patients, seeing the staff in overalls and protective gear, there are still people who still do not believe they have coronavirus, “said the doctor.
In children, the immune response can be much more turbulent than in an adult.
According to the anesthesiologist and resuscitator at the Kaunas clinic, V. Traškaitė-Juškevičienė, the form of the disease is usually mild in children with coronavirus, but there are cases in which the disease is much more turbulent than in adults.
“If the form of the disease is severe, the immune response in children can be much more turbulent than in adults.
Serious cases of coronavirus that occur in children are not uncommon, but they are much more painful. “Because of the child’s reaction, society and even doctors are more sensitive to seriously ill children,” said the doctor.
According to the doctor, it is extremely worrying that younger and younger people are sick. In the past, there was talk of people at risk over 65 with chronic illnesses, and now they are getting sicker and younger.
We are also concerned about the number of new infections a day, when we have 3.5 thousand new cases a day. It’s a shame for Medike that those numbers aren’t dropping just yet.
“Patients who come only with symptoms of Covid-19 disease experience severe shortness of breath. They work hard to breathe and we need to provide oxygen to make breathing as easy as possible.
Other people who have comorbid chronic diseases, so we see that the course of Covid-19 and that other disease is particularly complicated. Nephrology, hematology, and cancer patients are seriously ill. Most of them come to us with other illnesses – be it diabetes, kidney disease, or something else – and the onset of Covid-19 infection complicates everything.
They probably would have lived successfully with these diseases for many years without seeing any problems, ”noted the doctor.
There may also be a risk of heart attack.
The doctor reminded him that Covid-19 infection is also known to affect blood clotting. In humans, Covid-19 is associated with an increased risk of blood clots in the blood vessels. And that can lead to a heart attack.
“When blood clots form in blood vessels, it also affects the heart. They can form in the heart, legs, lungs, and other blood vessels by disturbing blood flow to certain organs.
Covid-19 patients are given special blood clot prevention medications, which thin the blood and prevent blood clots from forming. There may be a risk of heart attack.
Hospitalized patients are at increased risk of developing blood clots. If a person receives treatment at home, they are usually more active and the risk is lower, “said the doctor.
