It is true that the doctor’s wish to retire arose after the court recognized him in a contest for the position of manager by presenting a forged diploma.

If it weren’t for a court decision, there is little doubt that such a move would not have taken place. Especially since December of this year becomes the retirement age for V. Šileikis. In addition, the doctor, who had been working on counterfeiting for a long time, felt behind the founder: the leaders of the municipality backed him.

After the victory: the news of the forgery.

V.Šileikis started working as director of Šilutė Hospital in 2019 on December 5. The winner was selected by Mayor Vytautas Laurinaitis, who interviewed two of the top five candidates in the contest.

Algis Starkus, Head of the Surgical Traumatology Department, and V. Šileikis, Head of the Consultative Polyclinic, started the final conversation with a member of the “Order and Justice” party.

After the latter was chosen the winner, a few days later news came from the United States that the doctor could have won the contest by presenting a forged diploma.

The source reported that V. Šileikis, who had emigrated to the United States, had been a Lithuanian technician working in a Chicago hospital for about a decade, because he had not passed the exams or obtained a medical license.

Meanwhile, the doctor had submitted a diploma from Chicago State University to receive the degree of Doctor of Medicine. True, upon receipt of the application, this university immediately sent a response that the diploma was a forgery and did not offer any medical degree there.

The mayor defended the stumbling doctor

This message was made public in 2019. at the end of November, even before V.Šileikis started working, but the government men did not want to pay attention to it.

Mayor V. Laurinaitis told reporters that the applicant’s suitability for office had been verified and that the STT had issued a certificate. True, it later became clear that this service does not verify the authenticity of submitted documents.

There was also significant upheaval in the treatment facility itself. When the new director took office, his subordinates asked him many difficult questions, but V. Šileikis sidestepped and finally decided that all the answers would be provided by lawyers.

The mayor, who that day officially welcomed the head of the hospital, put an end to the alarmed doctors. “Tvarkietis” stated that he had received a certificate, everything was in order, so he had no doubts.

Paid for 2,000 euros

The mayor also stood his ground when the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office launched the preliminary investigation. V. Laurinaitis said that he would not make hasty decisions and would wait for the conclusions of law enforcement officials.

During the pre-trial investigation, Lithuanian officials contacted colleagues in the United States and representatives from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The latter confirmed that V. Šileikis, who had earned a warm place in the Šilutė hospital, had indeed submitted a forgery.

Imposed by evidence, V. Šileikis fully admitted his guilt, so after examining the case, the Šilutė court decided to honor the request and release him from criminal liability on bail.

A doctor who has made a career as a forger has received a contribution of 2,000 euros to the fund for crime victims.

V.Šileikis, who was in a hurry to voluntarily retire, received another favor: the hospital will pay for his departure.
