According to the company, a total of 163 thousand people were in debt last year. people: more than 114 thousand. It has an overdue debt, around 30 thousand. – two each, and more than 10 thousand. – three debts each.

“2020 was better than the previous year in terms of both the number of borrowers and the total amount of arrears,” Dovilė Krikščiukaitė, a lawyer at Creditinfo Lietuva, told BNS.

According to her, the level of indebtedness has been declining steadily since 2015, and deposits by households and companies in banks reached an all-time high at the end of last year.

According to the representative of Creditinfo Lietuvos, it is difficult to say firmly what were the reasons for the improvement in the situation, but the decision of people to redistribute expenses may have contributed to this. People have given up non-essential expenses: travel, restaurants, luxury items, clothing, cosmetics.

“Maybe they redistributed their expenses and maybe they had less expenses for some entertainment or non-essential goods, which allowed them to spend more on debt or generally to avoid new debt,” said the lawyer.

According to her, the situation could also have improved if the banks declared a moratorium on loans. The highest number of deferral requests was made during the period of maximum uncertainty, in March and April, after which they decreased.

“We also know from financial institutions that they have allowed people to delay their obligations due to some uncertainty. It just did not lead to new debts that could have arisen if that person had not set aside their determined payment,” said D. Krikščiukaitė.

“These are the reasons why we would see why a pandemic in this place has had a positive, not a negative impact,” he said.

However, the lawyer stated that there are more debtors in Lithuania than in Klaipėda, which is a lot considering the consequences that debtors face.

“Because companies that provide certain financial services to a person, they look at the fulfillment of the obligations of that person, the responsibility and seeing that the person has certain debts, it may be that they do not provide certain services,” said D. Krikščiukaitė. BNS.

According to the lawyer, the credit bureau system keeps records of each person’s debts for at least 10 years, and the usual practice of credit institutions shows that even a person who has settled arrears is monitored for at least two years to start paying for goods and services again.

Analysis of borrower data shows that women tend to value their financial obligations more responsibly. According to Creditinfo Lietuva, 69 percent. It is men who do not pay the total debt in Lithuania, and 31 percent. the debt falls on women.

The average amount of debt per borrower in Lithuania is 1,490 euros and the highest outstanding amount is 4.6 million. euros.
