The death of a teenager driving a scooter exposed the other side of the coin: parents, school and police should shrug their shoulders, not look for a culprit

The police reveal that they have to punish parents who encourage children to cycle crossroads, forget to buy bicycle helmets or wear a vest. Also, children often only learn about traffic rules and the differences between signs only in school.

The head of the Klaipeda Road Police Service, Mindaugas Džermeika, says that there are many reasons why children behave on the street without thinking about their safety. We must not forget when the example is adults, who many times put themselves and others at risk.

“Scooters are now very easy to rent, anyone with an app can use them. Scooters in the old town are driven more by intoxicated drivers. They are more likely to make mistakes, trip over a pedestrian or the like. In elsewhere, the speed of the scooters is more often chosen as inappropriate, the scooter blends in with the trails and hinders pedestrians, ”says M. Džermeika.

The interlocutor admits the need for stricter control of scooter drivers by the police, but remembers that the culture of how to ride comes from the parents.

“Parents should educate children, familiarize them with traffic rules and the educational institution should also participate in this process, so that people don’t just point to the police and say that only the police can solve something,” said Džermeika.

According to the official, parents sometimes not only do not teach the safety of the child, but also encourage him to commit an offense, there is more than one example in his practice: it is the case that a father or mother approaches a traffic light controlled by a stoplight, walk around it and encourage your child to do the same.

“In this way, it does not explain to the child how to behave in those situations: that we have to get off, not to say ‘son, we are driving faster, the green light is on’. In this way, parents themselves do not raise children. If children were introduced to the rules in schools, perhaps the child would come out and say “Dad, that’s the way to go.” The child, I think, is conscious enough from the fifth grade to learn the general rules of road traffic, ”says the head of the Klaipėda Highway Police Service.

After the tragedy in Slengi, the police do not hide that the road was not well thought out when the child died: the lane for pedestrians and bicycles is only on one side of the village, so the little ones who go to or come from school from many houses are forced to cross the road. The officials who have visited the place do not hide that they have comments not only from the officials who do not see the need to cross, but also from the old man of the settlement: the sign of the side road is hidden by Christmas trees.

During daily driver checks throughout the summer, attention is also paid to cyclists. During the shameful part of one of those raids on Wednesday, two children were involved as they were taken home with a police escort. Parents had to listen to police reminders that their children were behaving irresponsibly and unsafe while riding in a two-wheeler. Officials do not hide the fact that sometimes not even fines, but shame and the memory of a painful consequence, help adults to think.

“A child can only be processed administratively from the age of sixteen, but the parents are responsible for saying that they have violated the traffic rules of the children,” said Jermeika.
