According to the Foreign Ministry, “as of September 4, the Lithuanian ambassador to China will be invited for consultations, taking into account China’s statement on August 10.”
“The Lithuanian Embassy in China operates under the usual regime,” the ministry said.
China withdrew its ambassador in Vilnius for consultations in August due to Lithuania’s deepening ties with Taiwan, and is also calling for the removal of the Lithuanian ambassador in Beijing.
China’s Foreign Ministry said at the time that such a decision was motivated by a desire to open a Taiwanese representation in Lithuania. In its report, the ministry declared that this “decision is a flagrant violation of the Lithuanian-Chinese communication on the establishment of diplomatic relations and undermines the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, and other Western politicians have previously expressed support for Vilnius in the conflict with Beijing.
Beijing, for its part, calls on Lithuania to follow the “one China” principle. It means that the lands of Taiwan and mainland China are indivisible and belong to a clearly defined Chinese state.
Beijing considers Taiwan a rogue province.
