He began his research activity in 1969, working in the Palanga branch of the Research Institute of Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathology of the Kaunas Medical Institute (now Palanga Clinic of the LSMU Neuroscience Institute), whose research base was created from the beginning. .

1985 – 1987 was associate professor in the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology of the Klaipėda Faculties. 1985-1990 collaborated with the Moscow Medical and Biological Problems Research Institute in the development of computer diagnostic methods for the cardiovascular system, which were used to identify the functional status of astronauts and seafarers.

He was a lecturer and professor at Kaipėda University, and owns several inventions.

A.Stankus was one of the founders and a member of the Sąjūdis Palanga branch. 1991 he was elected to the first Council of Deputies of the City Council of Palanga, later he was a member of the Municipal Council of the City of Palanga for five terms.
