“Nemunas Island is becoming a place for entertainment, sports and recreation, and in fact we have been thinking for a while what to build so that someone who is behind our skyscrapers, skyscrapers and things like that does not come here,” he said to the press the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
“And we still don’t have a good normal swimming pool in Kaunas, it will be possible to organize whatever you want for the Olympics, because a pool with ten lanes and 50 meters long meets all Olympic standards,” he added.
Pool contract works for 25.8 million. The water sports complex will take 18 months to build.
According to V. Matijošaitis, the city could build the object independently, but the government is also expected to contribute to this.
“The government, when we see our work and if you start working, it really always contributes,” said the mayor.
The Kaunas chief expects the government to allocate funds for this purpose, which will remain unallocated or unused to finance other projects.

The multifunctional water sports center will be located next to the Žalgiris Arena, on its western side. A gallery connecting these spaces will extend from the arena to the main entrance.
Exceptional architectural solutions
Since the reconstruction of the Žalgiris Arena is carried out during the project, the municipality planned to acquire the reconstruction project without a tender from the studio of E. Miliūnas, who held the copyright to the project, but did not allow the Procurement Office Public did.
This problem was solved by commissioning a technical project from the E. Miliūnas studio to the company that manages the Žalgiris Arena. Later, the project was donated to the municipality.
According to the architect Aurimas Ramanauskas, who designed the pool, the building uses the existing relief, which merges with the building and becomes its fifth facade, a green roof.
According to Lukas Laukaitis, director of Conresta, the project is unique for its architectural solutions, since the building seems to emerge from the relief of the island. This uniqueness also requires unique technical solutions, which is why Lithuania’s largest beams will be manufactured and installed for the building. Groundwater will also be a challenge for builders.
“It is one of the largest in our projects, but the things I mentioned make the project exceptional. The terms, of course, are also quite strict for a project of this type, and there are many challenges ahead, ”said L. Laukaitis.
However, according to the contractor, if all parties involved in the project cooperate successfully, there should be no difficulties in its implementation.
The total area of the building of an energy class A + plant with a mezzanine will reach 18.4 thousand. kv. meters.
The capsule was launched on the Nemunas
To commemorate the start of construction works, a capsule was buried in its place on Friday. It was flown across the Nemunas River by two extreme swimmers, accompanied by fire divers.
According to the municipality, the first official swimming competition in Lithuania was symbolically mentioned, which took place in this section of the Nemunas in June 1924.
“From the Green Bridge, which we see there, in the distance, to the Aleksotas Bridge, it is from that moment that the story of our country’s swimming began to tell,” said Tomas Jarusevičius, adviser to the mayor of Kaunas, during the event.
Subsequently, the first outdoor swimming pool on Nemunas Island worked.
Saulius Binevičius, vice president of the Lithuanian Swimming Federation and director of the Kaunas Swimming School, emphasized that objects such as the new water sports center are important to encourage people to learn to swim and to prepare and train swimmers. .
“We hope that many Lithuanian swimming championships and international tournaments will be held here and we see the opportunity to see the Lithuanian Swimming Sports Center in the future, where the best Lithuanian swimmers could train,” S. Binevičius said during the event.
The new building will feature a 50-meter-long 10-lane pool with 500-seat grandstands for spectators. International rankings and national championships will be available here. The second, smaller pool will be used for the children’s swimming lessons. The pool with all the infrastructure will meet the requirements of the FINA International Swimming Federation.
There will also be a spa area for 300 visitors with complexes of saunas with three different temperature regimes, entertainment pools for children and adults and hot tubs. The water sports center also has a 200-seat sports club.
During the warm season, the pool function will expand to an outdoor recreation area with ornamental plants, recreation areas and sports fields.
