As soon as the decoration of the new city emerged, it received great attention. Some claim that he is happy, lifts his spirits as he passes by, and emphasizes the originality of Šilutė. But no less critical of the fact that the intersection is too small for “such a forest” that the floats obstruct visibility, there are too many and, in general, they do not understand what is on the “Saturday” …
The mayor of Šilutė Vytautas Laurinaitis admits that the sculptural composition does not look exactly as it should and will be adjusted in the future. And its author, Andrius Sirtautas, says that he was initially consulted to build decorations on the Traksėdžiai rotunda, which is several times larger in diameter. He compared the task he had with the cruise ship sailing towards the Šilutė pier …
Many opinions
The long-awaited floats at the roundabout were built on September 25 and immediately attracted great interest from Šilutė.
“You have already seen it?” We immediately received several calls from the townspeople as soon as they were built.
The photos of the composition “Šilutė News” on Facebook were the first in the lists, receiving more than 1700 reactions, hundreds of comments and many shares. From people’s opinions, it is clear that most of the people really like floats. They thanked A. Sirtautas for redecorating the city in the original way, expressing opinions that decorations could be in each rotunda.
“It is very beautiful, original, when I saw it it encouraged me, more and more interesting than the empty rings. That there is as much beauty as possible ”, commented Karina.
“I always wonder how many wonderful ideas there are for this person and what artistic and aesthetic works by Andrius. Thanks to him, I love this job. Sure, it may be lacking space, but the idea itself is great. Thank you Andrius Sirtautas for making Šilutė famous with your works! Daiva was happy.
Many people have noticed that the floats lack space in the narrow intersection. For example, Vitalija taught the opinion that such a composition would be perfect on the outskirts of the city, say at the intersection of Traksėdžiai, where many cars arrive from other cities. People should also be able to stop, get off and read what that piece symbolizes, because now many are not going to understand it. And it is impossible to stop near the intersection in the city center.
Other commentators did not forgive the sharpest criticisms. “The image is poor, in bad taste. You won’t understand what it is, what those numbers on top mean, what’s on the bottles. Better when there was nothing like chaos. My street, I live in it, I pass every day. I really don’t like it, “Birutė said.
“It just came to our notice then. With all due respect to Andrew, but this time I have to note that concrete and floats are not compatible… It would look better bent. Or… they will float in the fountain,” Remigijus commented.
The ring will have to look different
As there are many different opinions, we asked the mayor of the district V. Laurinaitis to speak as well. He admitted that not everything was done well, the vision of the Municipality was different. First of all, the floats are arranged too densely, in the words of the mayor, now they look like a forest. They are not informative either, they must have the names of the associated cities, the floats must be painted with the colors of the flags of those countries.
“We have given the public what we wanted, we will register evaluations, criticisms, comments and then the sculpture will have to be adjusted. We will meet with the author, we will talk about what is wrong, maybe it will even happen in the middle of October ”, said V. Laurinaitis.
The mayor considered that both the floats themselves and their quantity would have to be adjusted. It may be possible to distribute them over two intersections, and it may be possible to move them even to another roundabout, and Cintjoniškių st. to ride something else in the ring. “There is no good solution as it is now, this ring should look different,” summarized the mayor.
A. Sirtautas circulated a comment that these decorations should have been on the Traksėdžiai ring, but it was the City Council that transferred the idea to the city. The mayor says that the Traksėdžiai intersection was not discussed, the author of the idea was referred to this intersection and agreed with it.
According to V. Laurinaitis, no one has investigated which more cars pass through the intersection: Traksėdžiai or Cintjoniškės. According to him, not all guests come to Šilutė from Klaipėda, there are other entrances to the city, so not only locals but also guests go through the Cintjoniškės junction.
V. Laurinaitis believes that in the future other roundabouts in Šilutė will be decorated with compositions.
Like sailing on a cruise …
Artist A. Sirtautas, who creates sculptures in Šilutė and other cities, gave his opinion to Šilutė News. According to him, in the initial version it was planned to create the composition on the Traksėdžiai ring. “They asked me if I could do it. I agreed. Then there were disagreements about financing, the idea faded for years. Later, the location was changed: the Traksėdžiai variant was abandoned because it seemed difficult to reconcile there, ”he said.

Later, the Municipality wanted to build the floats on the newly built rings.
“I really didn’t want to move the project on visual pollution, as an alternative I offered other rings in the city. As if we agreed, I redesigned the project, but they called me, they say it will be where it is now, ”said the author of the idea.
The ring road of Cintjoniškių street is really very small and the traffic is heavy. For comparison, the diameter of the Traksėdžiai ring is 30 meters and that of Cintjoniškės is 6 meters. Andrius compared his task to sailing on a cruise ship with Šilutė pier pri
Several nights the artist observed the traffic on the Cintjoniškės ring and says that he realized that there could be a big conflict between the drivers and the customer, so for safety he had to sacrifice aesthetics. He painted the names of the floats and partners in more gloomy colors to annoy drivers as little as possible and raised the bright area to the top. The floats in the ring were arranged so that all the cars entering the ring could be seen.
“Although the construction of 12 floats was insisted, I did not agree because they would not be physically accommodated. And I did the remaining three so that in case of conflict I would go to dismantle. The floats are made of durable material, if 6 men returning from the bar were immortalized in them, they would hold out, ”Andrius said.
The artist agrees that public space objects always evoke many passions. While living in Šilutė, this was the municipality’s first order for him and, according to him, the last.
