The city wants and fears: the warship Sūduvis will be in Denmark, but conceived restrictions

The Klaipeda Municipality had one year to decide on the mooring place for the warship. On Thursday, the city council criticized the lack of initiatives: it was possible to interview the townspeople and discuss in depth the suitable places for a boat of this type, whose mooring in the city center provokes contradictory assessments.

Several mooring places were considered: near the Lithuanian Maritime Museum, near the Old Smiltyne Ferry, on the territory of the city of Memelis. There was also talk of the pier on the other side of the Castle Bridge, where the Old Ferry used to be and where the ferries were moored. It is no longer used, but its preparation would not require large investments.

Councilor S. Budin asked why this last proposal has not been returned, especially since there is convenient access in this place, kneeling, and the Port Authority had offered to take over the dock.

According to Deputy Mayor Arūnas Barbšis, it is motivated that maritime transport is active at this location, ships carrying passengers buzz in the summer, but the suitability of this location has not been discussed in depth.

Mooring the ship in the museum, in the opinion of the working group led by A.Barbšys, would require significant investments in the management of the pier. It is true that these funds, as planned, would fall on the shoulders of the Maritime Museum.

A.Velykienė suggested that the municipality take on obligations and organize the pier itself. This was also done for Meridian.

The woman also suggested building the boat temporarily, just for a couple of months, so everyone could appreciate what the place looked like.

Such an idea was negatively accepted, that the dock is not adapted and it would be dangerous to build a ship.

Councilor Vidmantas Dambrauskas proposed to form a five-year loan agreement instead of five years.

“It just came to our attention then. There is no Wolf Mesingo in Klaipeda who says: yes, it would be good in this place, bad in this one. Perhaps, personally, I doubt it, but perhaps the built ship will adorn the city and become an attractive educational place, or perhaps it will become a foreign body, that the city will not want to see, but we will not see without building, “said V. Dambrauskas, offering such an alternative. According to him, it would be enough to build a boat for a year and the townspeople could assess whether its location is suitable. He also suggested that the city take care of ordering the dock.

Personally, I doubt it, but perhaps the built ship will decorate the city and become an attractive educational place, or perhaps it will become a foreign body, which the city will not want to see, but we will not see without building, – said V. Dambrauskas.

Councilor Andrius Petraitis was surprised by the politicians’ proposals. According to him, the issue was not discussed in a committee, but in a meeting and he returned to the same thing: where to build a ship.

“The story becomes like a fairy tale. A request was made to the City Image Commission to consider the issue. Everyone agreed that this place was suitable, they didn’t catch anyone. The Department of Cultural Heritage says “apt”, the Navy, the museum itself, we have a wide range of organizations and individuals. The delay is reminiscent of a farce. Let’s take it, let’s agree on the form ”, said the councilor.

Olga Žalienė, director of the Maritime Museum, expressed concern about the layout and costs of the pier, if the location of the ship changes in the future.

“The investments are not that big, the city could prepare that berth for the ship with its own money, then it would be owned by the city and there would be no doubts,” suggested V. Dambrauskas.

Gintaras Neniškis, director of the municipal administration, said that in the near future a draft agreement or even several variants of it will be prepared with the Maritime Museum. The draft will be presented to the College of the Council. The contract is expected to be signed later this year.
