Readers explained to news portal tv3.lt that they were angry about the delayed shipments, because some of them became useless due to the delay. Vilma, who sells tomato seeds of various varieties, says she shipped the seeds on March 2, but customers haven’t received them until now.
“Above all, from what I have noticed, everything gets stuck in Vilnius. Old shipments stop and new ones go quickly. I have noticed that if I send the seeds now, they will already be at the recipient’s place in two days. shipments that were sent at the beginning of March are stopped, people do not receive them.
I send tomato seeds, which is a perishable product, they don’t last long, you have to sow them on time. I’m sure people also send a variety of important documents: to bailiffs, attorneys, and the like. In that case, a person cannot wait ”, Vilma shares her discontent.
Shipments are no longer necessary
Olyana from Alytus is one of Vilma’s clients. The woman has so far not received her order due to delays. According to her, she no longer needs the shipment because the sowing time has passed.
“On March 2, a package was sent from the Panevėžys district. The package, as far as I can see, was in Vilnius, as I understand it, all letters are distributed there. I asked for tomato seeds, I wanted to plant them. I heard that COVID-19 can cause letter delays. I thought for a week, nothing like that. A week later, I started looking for a package and calling the mail.
On March 9, I called a shared mail number, said a new distribution line was being installed and there was an outage. He said that my message will be sent to the distribution center and they will try to solve my problem. I called again on March 12 because I saw that the situation did not change. Once again, the woman kindly explained to me that something was wrong.
They assured me that the post office is open 24 hours a day. I called on Monday, but I saw that the situation was the same, so I went to the store, bought other seeds and sat down, ”the woman said indignantly.
Lithuania Post: we face unforeseen challenges
Ugnė Bartašiūtė, head of the communications department of the Lithuanian post, says that most of the automation work went smoothly, but there were also inconveniences experienced by customers.
“On March 1, Lietuvos Paštas switched to automated and centralized distribution. While most of the planned work went smoothly, we faced unforeseen challenges. At the same time, we capture higher than usual packet streams. For these reasons, some shipments traveled more than usual to customers.
First of all, we sincerely apologize to customers for the inconvenience. We do our best to deliver shipments and letters as quickly as possible, ”says the postal representative.
According to U. Bartašiūtė, the most common reason for delayed shipping is a wrong address, as well as delays caused by COVID-19.
“Most intercepted shipments and letters have already arrived or are on their way to the recipients. Letters and packages accepted for shipment this week should reach the recipients within the usual time limits.
There may be some problems when shipping in Lithuania. This is usually due to an incorrect recipient address. Once a client’s request is received, we quickly resolve such cases. Longer delivery times are possible for shipments received from abroad, because their journey is still affected by international logistical problems caused by the pandemic, ”says U. Bartašiūtė.
Several residents waiting for their packages have questions about the letter journey, when even one package travels through Vilnius from Panevėžys to Mažeikiai. The post office notes that the letters never traveled without stopping at intermediate stops.
“With the shift to automated distribution, it has also become centralized. This means that most packages and letters to the final recipient are distributed at the Vilnius Logistics Center.
It is important to note that in the past packages were distributed manually at several different stops, the package never traveled directly from one post office to another, now the opposite: at intermediate stops, only the package is transported and distributed at the new Vilnius logistics center ”, comments the postal representative.
Work is complicated by a pandemic
The new distribution center and the changes to the post office were planned three years ago, but according to postal representative U. Bartašiūtė, the current situation is also exacerbated by a pandemic.
“These changes were planned more than 3 years ago. Global trends have been showing increasing volumes of e-commerce shipments for several years. We could not foresee that at this very moment, when we will implement one of the most important projects in the history of Lithuanian Post, we will face the challenges of a pandemic and increased package flows.
With the increase in shipments, additional personnel have also been hired in other divisions. We are ready to hire more additional employees, but COVID-19 makes their search difficult, ”says the spokesperson.
