The candidates for the Supreme Court of Lithuania A.Driukas and E.Tamošiūnienė stood for the Seimas

The candidates for judges of the SCL are nominated by the president Gitanas Nausėda, who received this advice from the Council of Judges. After the candidates appear at the Seimas, the factions that wish to do so will meet with them, then the Seimas will vote on the appointment of the judges.

In its presentation, the Presidency notes that these renowned and respected members of the Judiciary have impeccable reputations, exceptional personal and professional competence, and solid legal experience.

A.Driukas has more than 36 years of legal work experience, he already held the position of judge of the SCL in 1999-2003, at the beginning of his career as a judge he worked in the District Court of the city of Druskininkai, he was president for a long time time of the Civil Cases Division of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal.

According to the Presidency, A. Driukas “is considered one of the pioneers of judicial mediation in Lithuania”, for five years he has chaired the Judicial Mediation Commission formed by the Council of Judges, has obtained a doctorate degree and is a professor at the Vilnius University.

“Based on my experience and knowledge, I can apply for the honorary position of SCL judge, I have worked in court for four years, then I returned to the Court of Appeal, I worked as a judge for 26 years, I worked as a lawyer in Druskininkai for 11 years, “he added.

“I jokingly say that there are two types of cases before the Court of Appeals: complex and very complex, but that is true. Today, the cases in the Court of Appeals come on very complex issues, very complex, both in fact and in law, so the examination of the case requires a lot of attention and preparation, ”said the candidate.

Another candidate, E. Tamošiūnienė, has more than 23 years of legal work experience, worked as a lawyer for a long time, has been a judge at the Lithuanian Court of Appeal since 2013 and was president of the Civil Cases Division of this court.

E.Tamošiūnienė also has a doctorate degree and teaches VU students, more than a month ago he became a member of the Council of Judges, Vice President.

When appearing at the Seimas, E. Tamošiūnienė stated that the work of an SCL judge “is not limited to training in practice, that is, the activity of hearing cases”.

“An SCL judge should be an example for all, an example for the judges of the lower courts, both in behavior and in scholarship,” said the candidate.

These candidates were recognized by the Commission for the Selection of Candidates for Judges as the most suitable for the position of judges of the SCL.

In accordance with the Constitution, the judges of the SCL are appointed and removed by the Seimas on the recommendation of the president, with the advice of the Council of Judges.
