This year, on the morning of February 23, the police and ambulance doctors from Panevėžys rushed to Staniūnų Street. Bystanders noticed a bloody man lying in the parking lot and called the General Assistance Center.

Rushed ambulance medics tried to resuscitate the unconscious man, but the middle-aged man did not survive. Later, forensic experts determined that he had died of a serious head injury. A resident of Panevėžys, who lived nearby, was brutally beaten and hit on the head with at least 17 blows.

A pre-trial investigation into the murder was launched. It was carried out by officials from the Serious Crimes Investigation Service of the Criminal Police of the Panevėžys County Police Chief Commissariat, and the investigation was conducted by Valdemara Chodorcevičienė, Prosecutor of the First Prosecution Division of the Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Two suspects were identified during the pre-trial investigation. Initially, officers detained a young man, who was still a well-known law enforcement officer at the time, and in March, a second suspect was arrested in Norway and brought to Lithuania under a European arrest warrant.

According to the prosecutor who conducted the preliminary investigation, V. Chodorcevičienė, neither of the two defendants admits their guilt.

For murder for selfish motives, the Penal Code provides prison sentences of eight to twenty years or life imprisonment. Theft is punishable by arrest or imprisonment for up to six years.

The case has been transferred to the Panevėžys Regional Court, reports the prosecutor’s office.
