On Friday, 44 Seimas members voted in favor of a registered project of the ruling “peasants”, 12 were against and five deputies abstained. There is still the last vote on the law, it is scheduled for Monday.

The project on the commemorative status of Lukiškės Square was registered by the authorities in response to the Vilnius authorities’ decision to install a temporary beach on Lukiškės Square. Some politicians argue that this shows disrespect for the memory of those involved in the fight for freedom.

The representative of the Freedom Party, the mayor of the capital, Remigijus Šimašius, takes the position that the beach of Lukiškės square is equipped with the opportunity to enjoy freedom and “celebrate the fact that we are winners in the fight for our freedom. “

The draft was released Thursday and is being considered as a matter of urgency, and the governors intend to approve it by the end of Tuesday’s spring session.

The bill states that the commemorative accents in Lukiškės Square “must include and reflect the struggles for Lithuanian independence and the memory of dead combatants.”

He states that “the current state of the square and the way it is managed do not correspond to its historical and urban importance and threaten to destroy the nation’s historical memory.”

The temporary beach, established in Lukiškės square in the capital by decision of the Vilnius municipal government, received controversial reviews from ruling and opposition politicians.

Critics claim that such a project is unsuitable for Lukiškės Square, and also criticize the fact that neither the public nor the municipal council or the administration agreed when planning the project.

The city municipality announced on Monday morning that the installation of an artificial beach is beginning on Lukiškės Square in the center of Vilnius.

This week, the 1,660-square-meter beach was dumped in the Lukiškės Square part, near Gediminas Avenue, about 300 cubic meters of sand were used for this purpose.

The beach will be in the square throughout the summer, and next to it until the end of July there will be a large screen, the content of which is in charge of Telia: every night films, series, Telia TV concerts and views of the Baltic Sea will be shown during the day.

The State Cultural Heritage Commission declared this week that the temporary beach installed in Vilnius Lukiškės Square is incompatible with its historical and commemorative importance.
