The best children’s book was published “What the Bumblebee Thought” by the author Vainius Bakas and the illustrator Marija Smirnovaitė (Žalias kalnas publishing house).
The best book for teenagers is “Juodavandeniai” (publisher “Nieko rimto”) by Ignė Zarambaitė.
The best adult book is “Bodies” by Akvilė Kavaliauskaitė (Editorial BLANCA).
The best poetry book is “People” by Enrika Striogaitė (publisher “Naujasis lankas”).
The best journalism and documentary book is the book compiled by Kęstutis Pikūnas, Jonas and Adolfas Mekas’ Letters of Life (Post scriptum. Editorial Littera).
Previously, the books were nominated in four categories, in 2018. Also included is the fifth category, journalism and documentaries. This decision was made in view of the fact that there is more and more literature of this type, which readers are happy to choose from.
You were able to vote for the books selected by the experts on the Election Book of the Year website (www.metuknyga.lt), as well as send letters by email and regular mail. This year, almost 32,000 votes were cast for the Yearbooks.
The Ministry of Culture awarded the authors of the book winners with five hundred euros, and the author’s stamp studio Ekslibris.lt presented nominal stamps. The author of the stamps is the graphic artist Jūratė Kemeklytė-Bagdonienė.
The aim of the “Book of the Year Choices” campaign is to encourage Lithuanian writers to create high-quality modern literature for people of all ages, to encourage people of all ages and different social groups to read, and to ensure availability artistically valuable literature.
The idea of the campaign is to present the best works of Lithuanian literature published last year in the categories of children’s books, teenagers, adult prose, poetry and journalism and documentaries.
The election of the Yearbook has been held annually since 2005. The campaign is organized by the National Library Martynas Mažvydas of Lithuania, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the National Radio and Television of Lithuania.
