“It is a well organized attack and they are [žudikai] they were professionals, ”Ambassador Bocchit Edmond told reporters.
“We have a video and we believe they are mercenaries,” he added.
As Haiti’s Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph reported, Moise was assassinated early Wednesday morning at his home.
The president was assassinated by a group of armed men who also wounded his wife. The latter was hospitalized.
“The president was assassinated in his home by foreigners who spoke English and Spanish,” Joseph said.
Moise ruled his country, the poorest on the American continent, postponing the elections. Parliamentary elections scheduled for 2018 have been postponed due to controversy, including the end of the presidential term.
In addition to the political crisis, the country has experienced an increase in kidnappings in recent months, reflecting the growing influence of criminal gangs in this Caribbean state.
Haiti also suffers from chronic poverty and natural disasters.
The president also faced opposition from a large part of the population who illegally held him. In addition, he replaced seven heads of government in four years. Joseph, who had just served three months as prime minister, also had to be replaced this week.
In addition to the presidential, parliamentary and local elections, a constitutional referendum was scheduled to be held in Haiti in September, which was postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Spanish-speaking attackers
Edmond has indicated that the country’s first lady, Martine Moise, will travel by plane to receive treatment at a Miami hospital.
“I can tell you that this morning the necessary preparations have been made for her to be transferred to a hospital in Miami,” the ambassador explained.
The diplomat added that the objective is to know the location of the murderers, their motives and origin. According to Edmond, the attackers spoke to each other in Spanish.
He added that these people may have already fled Haiti; they are likely to have fled to the neighboring Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic.
“We don’t know if they left,” the diplomat said. – If they are not currently in your country, there is only one way for them to leave, too [sausumos] borders because there is no plane. “
According to Edmond, the flight of a private plane would have been registered by the civil aviation authorities, but if the attackers had crossed the land border, they could have gone unnoticed.
